Sorry for being so curious, but I really want to know, what's your opinion about tattoos and if you've got some. ...and if you've got some, then: What do they mean to you? What motif (and location) did you choose and why? What's the story behind your tattoo (for example: Did you make your decision spontaneously or after extensive thinking?) What was the reaction of your family and friends? Do you regret having yourself tattooed? ... And of course, I wanna see pics, harhar! Ehm...I myself have got no tattoos (not yet)...though I would like to have one, but I can't make up my mind what motif (o.k., probably a dragon), what kind of technique (hmm, perhaps it should look like a pencil drawing...maybe in celtic style) what size (not too big) and where (that's a real problem)

\o/ What do they mean to you? Mjøllnir:- Taken in the early spring '02. - I was extremely much into Scandinavian languages, the (ancient) Scandinavian culture, history etc. back at that time, thus I designed my own version of this nowadays very well-known and famous hammer symbol with some additional runes in it; the text Lumiusva (= "snowmist" in Eng.) stands for thematics for my first band Talvi ('98-'04; band name means "winter"). - Nowadays this picture stands only for certain very intensive, valuable and remarkable but however already gone stage and period of time in my life; the symbol or via that the whole culture, heritage etc. related to it doesn't mean anything to me anymore itself, as I've proceeded to completely different, newer and more remarkable matters already for numerous times after that. "Sunshield":- Taken in the early spring '04. - I designed this picture from the idea of the quite global sun(wheel) symbol, although I've always considered it as my very own symbol afterall, as for me it has always symbolized my own purposes and ideological matters in a lot wider scale, namely being and thinking as a whole; exploring and finding, seeing and experiencing, perceiving and comprehending, developing and creating, advancing and evolving, all the factors being the ones to keep me continuing within whatever I do. Antlers-wings-roots:- Taken in the summer '06. - An abstract figure where the reindeer antlers, bird wings and roots of a tree are combined into a shamanistic/totemistic symbol with the general characteristic features of the Siberian indigenous peoples: reindeers have been a very important animals for all the peoples living in the arctic through the ages already (livelihood; draught, food, clothes, tools, instruments...), the wings have symbolized a shaman's journeys between the upper, mid and lower worlds, and the tree roots simply stand for the concept of the "world tree" which has been common for many peoples around the whole northern half on Earth as well. - The figure in itself stands for my greatest nowadays' interests within all the circumpolaric indigenous people, their cultures, languages, history and heritage, and which I'm furthermore also studying in the university in the purpose of specializing myself thoroughly in these matters to finally be able to build up my own academic career as a researcher for all these subjects in question. What motif (and location) did you choose and why? I prefer shoulders and arms in general; easy to reveal, easy to cover and easy to see them myself (and via that easy to observe them for possible need for treatment of course before but also after the proper recovering of the skin surface). What's the story behind your tattoo (for example: Did you make your decision spontaneously or after extensive thinking?) I've always had very extensive thinking and long-term planning with all of my pictures so far; when the question is about my own ideological matters brought up as pictures on my skin, I'd never make any spontaneous or hasty decisions about anything such. What was the reaction of your family and friends? Friends have mostly nothing else but liked them very much and my parents have got used to them quite well (especially as my father is an old sea-captain having roamed around the world, thus seen a lot of tattoos during his life). Then again, I'm afterall an adult man having lived on my own for several years now and kept making my own decisions about my life, thus no matter what other people think of my tattoos; completely my own body and my own business, heh. Do you regret having yourself tattooed? Self-evidently never. If one even starts to think in the way like "what if I regret it afterwards", then better to leave the whole matter and stay as far away of it as possible. Never regret what you've done, rather regret what you've left undone. And of course, I wanna see pics > irc-galleria.net/view.php?nick=KuurapartaI've already got a couple of ideas and even a couple of final pictures for new tattoos, but more about all that in the future then, no further revealings yet.

@kuuraparta: great Tattoos!!!! I like it!!!
What do they mean to you?
I've got a Tattoo of 3 dolfins. I see the Dolfin as a goddes and the Eagle as a god.... I will have a Eagle one time, don't know yet where and still thinking about the picture....
What motif (and location) did you choose and why?
My Tattoo is on my shoulderblade.... It is a place what will not wrinkle to much if you're older.... ;-) ;-)
What's the story behind your tattoo (for example: Did you make your decision spontaneously or after extensive thinking?)
I thought about it for a year.... Then I made an appointment and got a voucher for a tattoo from a friend.... (not for the wole amount, but a bit....) And now I'm thinking about the Eagle a lot, where and what etc. and when I'm ready to decided I will take one....
What was the reaction of your family and friends?
They all find it nice.... My dad said nothing much.... It was my decicion.... My mom thought it was neccesary to say that this was the only one I could take when I was living in their house.... Now I'm living on my own for a couple of years, so someday not far in the future I will take another one....
Do you regret having yourself tattooed?
No, absolutely not!! But I have decided to take a symbol or pictures what I can't regret....

I'm too quirky for taking a tattoo.... But maybe that will change in the future. If I'll take one, it sure will be a tattoo I designed myself. Something with a special meaning to me, but it's pretty logical you take a tattoo wich has a special meaning to yourself

@ Kuuraparta, nantaquoud & jannekeI think it's indeed logical, that the tattoo has a special meaning to yourselves and to do a lot of thinking beforehand. I can't understand people, who have themselves tattooed spontaneously, but nevertheless it happens... I would surely design my tattoo myself, too, or at least modify an existing motif... (but I will be at least 90 years old, when I finally get my tattoo, since I take no quick decisions : easy to reveal, easy to cover and easy to see them myself I agree!!! Specially "easy to see them myself" is an important criterion for me, too! Don't want to have to look in the mirror or to crane my neck... a place what will not wrinkle to much if you're older.... ;-) ;-) Hm, haven't thought about that up to now. Seems to be a complex problem to find the right place! None. Don´t see any need to have one. Actually it´s more special to not have any tattoos or piercings! I don't want a tattoo to be more special. In everyday life it will be covered...so nobody has to know of it, cause it will be for me and not for others. But I will be very proud to have one. an dragon are also animals which are so interesting and great..... ;D ;D ;D ;D!

I'm so scared of needles so that's probably the main reason why i never ever couldn't have a tattoo. And also there's no text or a picture which would mean so much to me that i would carry it with me always...there's always the risk that i would get totally bored with it someday.

I wont answer the questions all in particular but I try to express my tattoos though: My first one I got in the year 2004. It is a violin clef on my right shoulder. Though it seems quite a simple idea it means a lot to me. Not just being my first step to self expression and deciding freely what I want to be like, it is as well a symbol for my life in general. Without music I simply cannot imagine to live anymore because everything of me is expressed by music and by practicing music myself. I define myself through music and sometimes it is the only ''acoustic imaginary I'' which is able to listen to me the way I need it. Paradox idea 'cause I am the one listening in general. So its like interaction and blabla.. It made me many times proceed in what I have to do instead of cracking up and remaining passive. Sometimes I just cannot express myself without the help of lyrics and compositions and am thankful that music is able to still make me feel and to offer me the possibility to set my feelings free. No matter how destructive they might be.. ok I will stop here. So far that's the first one. No pic unfortunately. My second step to the needle-man was the Sword on my left arm in 2005. Jep. Again simple but I designed it myself. I sympathize with the nordic idea of Valkyries and so on and I like swords. I am a Life action Role Player from time to time and favor the Fighting- characters always. Swords mean disciplin, intellect, force and the will to survive to me and although I am not finnish the idea of ''Sisu'' is implied as well. The sword has some hiden messages in it the observer has to judge when seeing. Unfortunately no pic either. My third one is a rather celtic or something cross-like symbol on my upper back made before the Klaani Gig in November last year in the Cologne Underground . Not having designed it myself I took it off from the cover of the Moonsorrow Album Verisäkeet. No deeper story or something behind it. It reminds me of Finland in a way although I do not really know whether this symbol has been found as well in Finland and is of finnish origin. It is to me like putting all parts of my personal sides together and to create a harmonious whole. Being set where anatomically all the nervous strains meet the Power of the Symbol is spread throughout the body... And of course a credit to Moonsorrow but this should be the last reason for a tattoo. Just sounds good That's it: i105.photobucket.com/albums/m235/Sankarihauta_1986/Moonsorrowavatar-1.jpg

Of course this kind of symbols and alike have been found along the coastal areas of Finland as there have been contacts with the Scandinavians (vikings) in the past, but to be precise, such ornaments have however never been characteristic for namely the Finnish (or even widely Finno-Ugric) culture (nor that such would have any origins within them either); that picture represents clearly and directly the Indo-European style of symbolicism, decoration and art, Celtic and Germanic to be exact. Moonsorrow plays metal music mostly based on the Scandinavian themes, thus there's not much of anything very Finnish in their expression in general as well (inspite of the small usage of our native tongue here and there). But it's a nice and cool picture anyway! Btw. Our professor in the Finno-Ugric department said about my Siberian-styled tattoo that it reminds very much of the quite common and usual (although ancient) bear symbols of the Ob-Ugric people (Khanty and Mansi) in the western Siberia, thus there's some meanings more added into the picture of mine now, as the bear is a very important and essential totem animal for the Uralic people as well.

In University my Professor for Finnish Philology told us about the importance of the bear for the Finno- ugric culture. We had a presentation about the Carelianism and National Romance period or whatever it is called in english ( for that my english is so crappy I should anyways concentrate on Finnish in that case) and reminded us of the two bears in front of the Kansallismuseo in Helsinki, which is, concerning the architecture something like an conglomerate of the symbolism at that time. Really interesting it is.. About the Khanty and Mansi my group had to prepare a short presentation in our Finnougristics subject last term. Really interesting. We had a test as well where we had to fill in a map( Lehikoinen, 1995) with the different locations of the peoples, population numbers and numbers of speakers and so on..I guess the Khnaty are 13.000 and the Mansi 3.000 referring to www.suri.ee.. But back to the tattoos. I like yours much.. not overtaxed or sth. I would have expected my tattoo on the back to be non- finnish. And for that I am of indo-germanic origin it fits anyway I thought about a Kalevala inspired motive for the next time but until then I have to collect some .. what was it called? Money.

I Love tattoos! My boyfriend is a tattoo artist, and I am learning how to do them as well (more difficult to do properly than drawing!! heh). I have a few now, and a long list yet to go! I'll get them pretty much anywhere except forearms/hands, neck, and head/face. Many of my current ones are spiritual symbols of various traditions; each one symbolizes my stage of spiritual development at the time. The rest are cats in various stylistic forms; because I love cats and I have a very special bond with them. The cat is my "spirit animal" perhaps.
If I had tons of money, I'd probably be covered by now...!! But, I am trying to save skin space for some expensive but spectacular and famous tattoo artists (like Guy Aitchison - my favorite).
And - no regrets at all! I started getting tattooed at age 16, and even though the first few I would perhaps do differently if the skin were blank now, they are a symbol of who I was at that time, and hence no regrets.

Perhaps, you can add some pics later?! Specially your sword-tattoo makes me very curious Btw. That's great. I like bears. It's good, when something positive (or at least positive for you) is added to the meaning of the tattoo afterwards! I probably would be afraid it could be the other way round...but I know, I know...it's only important, what it means to oneself... I Love tattoos! My boyfriend is a tattoo artist, and I am learning how to do them as well... Cool, that's very useful! Has he done some of your tattoos?

That's my tattoo i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/angel_hell/Tattoo.jpgI love tattoos and I'm definitely gonna get more one day. I choose the lion cause I have this deep affection for all sorts of cats and wildcats and leo is my star sign. I thought about it for two years, mainly because I couldn't find anyone who could design the lion the way I wanted it. So in the end the tattoo artist itself designed it. The next tattoo is gonna be a harder decision, though, and I will take some time again to think about. Nothing worse than ruining your body with and unwanted or bad tattoo. My mom and my stepdad like my tattoo a lot (they have both have one tattoo). My dad doesn't know about it, hehe, I can hide pretty well.
