1: Hungarian style pear brandy (pálinka) - though this was just half-home-made, because I took the fruit to the distiller and they finshed. Anyway it was better than the bottled brandy.
2: Black currant liqueur

Mead? My favorite alcohol. I am pretty in it, I already drink it regularly for some time now. I have got 3 horns here which have only got one purpose: to fill the mead in something dignified for it. Here in Germany most if the mead is really tasty, but there are huge differences. When I was in Poland, I discovered a shop where there were 20 sorts of mead. So I had to smuggle 20 bottles of mead to Germany ;D But I did it and I am still having some bottles, between these 20 bottles there was also the best one I ever had.

Aluma is back again! Whenever someone talk to make own drink, i'm there Sorry my english are realy shit but i'll try my best. You need 30 bananas, 3 ananas, 5 kg syrup? (siirappia perkele) 5 kg sugar and hiivaa (mikä lie englanniksi) Mix everything together and make like homewine or kilju. You get something like 30l homemade rum (vol 20%) My latest and best resept.

yeah i know that sanakirja is handy (olin kurssilla niin enpä kamalasti omia juttuja ehtinyt tekemään niin jäi tarkempi kääntäminen välistä) i was Aluma but my account need a activation key (again) and i'dont have anymore that email where it was.. So i'm Fu beging today. That homemade "rum" is very delicious i don't make anything else anymore ;D

At this pub where my friend works at, there is like a 100 year old bottle mead which is £6.50 for a small measure- must try!

I must do that moonsorrow's krigsmjöd sometimes. Maybe at wappu (fest of workers). Mead which is sold on shops in Finland is so horrible. Its like soft drink but tastes not so good.

For everyone who makes the mead according to H. Sorvali's recipe: note that if you want to add any of those juices to it they have to be 100% natural without ANY added stuff on it. Basically, if you buy the juice from a store it's's chemicals and preservers will ruin the mead.

Thank you Nordis for your clarification. That's a very significant information. And eveyone who makes the mead according to that recipe have to keep in mind that home-made juice is also lot of better than the one which is bought from a store. And of course it's more primitive mead if you have picked the berries from swamp and made the juice yourself than if you buy it from a store

Did anyone succeed in making Henri Sorvali's mead? Does that recipe work or are there more things to be aware of? Come summer I'll be giving it a try!

I've tried it twice and always ruined it with the juices I mentioned above. I think I'll try it without any juice next time I have my doubts about the plastic bottles mentioned in the recipe as mead tends to get even more bubbles than beer... Anyway, I don't see why the recipe wouldn't work if you use proper juices and take the same care of hygiene and temperature as you do with brewing beer.

I know I posted it in another thread but seems far more relevant here. I used this recipe:
So far still fermenting. I will check the alcohol content, then put it in grolsch style swing top bottles to age for about 6-8 months. I think we should start a homebrewing thread here.
Oh, and while you are on the subject of mead... any good recipes for mulled mead? I tried some gorgeous one in the Xmas market, but I am wary of using the same spices that I use for wine, any suggestions?

I've been making and taught a few college friends of mine a simple recipe. I know there are much better recipes out there, but I still can't get over how great the simple stuff tastes. Too tired to write the details, but nothing but Honey, Water, and Yeast, plenty of honey and yeast, only enough water to get it going. Adding some sugar to sweeten it up. Fermenting in gallon jugs by hot water heaters. Extremely simple, extremely tasty, and cheaper than the crappy meads that are available locally here in the US. Again, it's probably not the best, nor safest to drink, but what's a little home-brewing if you don't poison yourself every now and again? Haha Each batch that has been made by me or my friends past and present have only fermented for brief periods, and yet the alcohol content was good. Once I get more time and more money for supplies, I'll age it longer, add in other ingredients, and hopefully become somewhat good at backyard brewing.
