Well, I feel like adding some thoughts to this. I've been in the metal scene for many, many years and as a woman it hasn't always been easy. It was always kinda odd to watch how guys react if they find out you actually like the music (and not because the singer is hot) and know more than 3 bands. I discovered metal for myself and have been living it for a long time. Guys seem to be bewildered by that fact a bit.
I also met many girls in the metal scene who are not metal at all ... I prefer calling them the "girl friends". They just listen to metal because their boy friend does and burned them a Sentenced cd for cuddling. Actually, these and the so-called gothic girls are often the same. Boring girls who all look the same. Did anyone sell cheap black hair dye or what? It took a long time to find female friends in the metal scene who actually were like me. Into the music, into the lifestyle and willing to fight for it. My friends and I agree that there are many nutty females around in the metal scene. But hey, I can live with that because I know there are kick ass girls out there.
And about girls in bands. Bad, bad topic. Actually, I don't even considder Evanescence metal. Maybe numetal ... I don't know. For me,it always feels as if girls in bands either have to do the cutsy gothic diva stuff or try to behave tougher than the guys do. That seems kinda ridiculous. I cannot listen to all these high-pitched chicks because most of them cannot sing or just pull up a dramatic show. And for those, who try to be tougher than guys on stage ... why? I mean, female qualities don't have to be running around in a velvet dress or wearing fishnets. I personally think it's time girls find their own way and be creative. Then, they will start being more influencial in metal music and stop being mere decoration or carricatures of guys.

I don't agree with you on these points. I doubt if you ever gave some so-called "gothic girls that are often the same" any chance for a serious conversation about metal with you, it looks like you just have prejudices about these girls. By the way: Sentenced is not a band to belittle... And there are plenty of bands with female members who aren't doing cutsy gothic diva stuff, or trying to be tougher than the guys, Meiju Enho for example.

Maybe I am weird then that I don't care what people think of me? Or maybe weirder that today I almost made a little boy cry with my ugliness. Some eight year old boy saw me talking to friends in a rather animated way and made a scrunched up teary eyed face saying I had a scary ugly looking face andhid behind his older brother. I actually was kind of amused. Also, I didnt mean in my own neighbourhood...metal doesnt exist here, lol. I suppose, forums like this are the exception to me seeing metal women.

I just had some encounters that made me pissed. I am not against anyone in person and I do talk to everyone before I make a judgement. I didn't wanna make a general statement here, too. Just things I observed and didn't like. Not to mention that I've been a Sentenced fan myself for more than 10 years now. Ehem, and I have to admit I don't know Meiju Enho or at least I cannot link the name to anything right now. Also, scenes in different countries might be different, too. My experiences mainly come from the German and American scenes.

What should a girl/women in metal look like? How should she behave? I think outside and inside are also important parts. When yo are young, you concentrate on outside, like clothing, make up, etc. And its always harder to girls to show that they're metalheads. It's not enough to have long hair. It took me years to explain my mum why shoul I wear black clothes and why I hate pink fashionable mini skirts and girlies, and so on. I think women are women, no matter what they're wearing.
And I think Runenmeisterin has some right.: after having spent more than 10 years in the metal scene, you just notice that people are changing around you. Former metalheads are disappearing, having families, cutting their hair, changing their clothes and listening commercial music. Though about 30 percent stays, but most of them are men. By the way, how come that Doro's name wasn't mentioned in this thread? I think she was almost the first women in metal...

oh there are many metal playing women... ensiferum, battelore, riger, equilibrium, arch enemy... but the reason for women not "singing" is that it's so hard to sing... I think that's the reason I never could sing a black or death metal song...

But why do women need to sing? HoW many Girls du you know who play guitar or bas? The most girls who play instruments play more keyboard, or sometimes the fiddle. And normaly they do this in long velvet dresses. I don't know of one female drummer. And I think this is because Women still have to fit into the clichees of beeing beatuiful, and not too tough.
Runenmeisterin is right if she says that women have to create their own "metal identity". I think Christina from Lacuna Coil is a nice Example here.

I understand the thing with the vocals because it might be hard for some girls to do growls though there are many great exceptions. Actually, there are quite a few female singers around though most of them are not my cup of tea. I am just looking for real female band leaders who write songs, play guitar and are the head of the band. There are really a few. Emancipation hasn't arrived here, huh? MoonDancer: Maybe no one mentioned Doro because hardly any younger people know her. It's different with people 30 or 35+. I never liked her music but at least she seemed to do her own thing back in the 80s. Today, I feel as if she is one of these older musicians who just try to catch up with the good old times.

Well, thanx gods, although it is difficult to form a band being a girl in my country,I know many true female metalheads and my sister does a HELL of a growl! But,as I said before,a woman does not have to growl to sing in a metal band(I do the power vocals;))There are also girls who write and play music but in my country they have difficulties in being accepted on the scene,so they usually give that up and dedicate themselves to other areas. But,many male metalheads are as fake as those gothic faking girls that runemeister mentioned...they dissapear in time... Swiatowit@no,I don't find it important to look nice and I don't find it a compliment when a guy says so(although they do not say it,so I've accomplished my mission)I prefer when people notice my art, writing, voice or intellect.Thank you very much, love from Vargaskinn:))))

HoW many Girls du you know who play guitar or bas? The most girls who play instruments play more keyboard, or sometimes the fiddle. Female German bass players: Aborted: Equilibrium: And there`s many more bands, Mighty D. used to have a female guitarist, etc.

Yeah, we've probably all heard of all these female musicians. I still don't see too many female band leaders who shape the band's image in the public eye musicwise. I'd love to see more. What a pity I have no musical talent at all. I'd give it a try.
