quote: I will keep this band on as far as my hair is grey and the guitar falls down from my wrinkled hands
That's a relief! Since you are still young, you can make a lot more of this real marvellous music with all Korpiklaani members!
quote: Maybe the main reason was that our tiny band would easily got buried under all of these Elvis collections and other albums because of the Christmas sales.
Do you really think people want Elvis if they can get Korpiklaani? Honestly, I think you could have released your album at any time, quality will be recognized in the long run...
quote:...it is not so easy to mix all of these acoustic instruments against metal walls.
Nicely said and even better done! A lot of 'folk/metal' bands use only, or mostly electronic instead of acoustic instruments. Sounds completely different.
Nice interview, and nice to mention us ;D
The second interview is also interesting...

Here comes an interview from Russian magazine DarkCity
I was walking in the forest and saw demon… But now you shouldn’t go anywhere – it’s enough to longer your hands and take a new CD of Finnish group KORPIKLAANI ‘Voice Of Wilderness”. There you can find primeval forests, evil demons, wise shamans and unusual music atmosphere, in which you can’t separate icy fear from turbulent fun. Nominally people from Forest Clan have released only 2nd CD, but it is hard to be confounded by the simplest problem. And if you go further in this forest, you can simply vanish in the thicket of facts. For example, group founder, vocalist and guitarist Jonne Jarvela formerly was member of not unknown to us Finntroll. And he began his wonderful way from creation acustic Lapland folk-duett Shamaani-Duo and did it with such a success that Minister of Culture of Finland wasn’t shy to gift their 1996-album to presidents Bill Clinton and Boris Eltsin. Then Jonne suddenly decided to follow Amorphis. So he created rather serious folk-rock-metal collective Shaman with debut “Idja” (1999). Their fans didn’t have time to slam their mouses, opened after release of “Shamaniac” (2002), like new CD – “Spirit Of The Forest” – was done under Korpiklaani-brand and contained even more extreme material. So we can’t avoid using guide in this deep thicket. And who will play this role better than Jonne himself?
- So, the first question – what have you changed the group name for 3 times? Cause there is nothing worse for business than brand loss… - Simply the time was spent on finding myself as a composer and musician. Moreover some happened things had great influence on my music. I can’t press it out, it flows from me itself. And I never think, if it is good or bad for business. And it isn’t business at all, it’s my life.
- And your life, obviously, connected with forest?
- We are from countryside, forest was always near us, and wherever we are we always stay ordinary country-boys. You should look for the roots of our music in deep Finnish thickets. And “Voice Of Wilderness” is very honest and really Finnish album. We use only true instruments, no synths or keyboards. And as “VOW” is “natural” product, it was easy in the studio. We had a lot of fun while recording – you can make sure of it listening to the result. In spite of the name we don’t want to frighten anyone. On the contrary, all the sense is entertainment for everybody.
- Nevertheless, your music changed a lot from Shaman times
- Yes, me and my music are more and more deepening into Finnish forest wilderness. Away from shaman tunes of mountain Lapland!
- And closer and closer to Moonsorrow and Scyclad?
- Yes, there is such case. Cause our violinist played on two last Moonsorrow albums too. We have same musical roots with him, and concerning Scyclad we only use the same means. I mean basis on rock-instruments and many violin parts. But our musical roots aren’t close to each other.
- All your works are decorated with the same symbol, some man. What does it mean?
- It’s an old shaman and magic symbol. A man keeps tambourine in one hand and wooden hammer in the other. You can meet this sign carved in stone in many places of Finland and north of Russia.
- As I know, you know about Russia not through hearsay?
- I’ve been to you twice and have had a lot of fun. Nice people (yes, we are JJJ ), good beer and wonderful gigs. Some friends from Russia appeared after last autumn concert. Now we are corresponding by e-mail. Also, I have an old friend of mine, she is Russian, but now she lives in Finland. She translated articles from your magazine for me when I get it.
- Has Russian folk-music influenced on you somehow?
- Certainly, especially old Karelian folk. It’s hard to find other Russian folk-music.
- Accordion sounds bring special Russian colouring to your music. Like it is sung in a chastooshka: “Accordionist is good enough to worry one’s heart! Introduce him to us!
- His name is Juho, we live in the same town – Lahti. Not time I met him at our gigs and knew, that he plays guitar and sings in Falchion, but at first was not well informed, that he plays accordion as well. Juho asked himself, if we needed a person for this role. And he fited, because accordion sounds on our albums, but always due to session musicians. I was sure before that it was impossible to find a constant accordionist for metal-group. So I was very glad, when Juho took this place. Of course, he is younger than others, but it isn’t important – he plays as Odin.
- And on a new album too?
- No, we had to invite Katja Juhola for performing accordion-parts, because Juho appeared in our group after recording. By the way, my father Eero Järvelä, uncle Raimo Järvelä and a couple of their friends performed in choir on “Kadet siipina”. They all are members of folk ensemble. And Katja Juhola too.
- You seem to be a friend of Pasi Koskinen from Amorphis? Didn’t he help you?
- He didn’t on this album, but we had already discussed possibility of writing lyrics for Korpiklaani. Or even vocal lines. It isn’t clear now. But probably dark forest of our music will be thicker due to Pasi’s fantasy.
- I watched a bit of your photos of one period. But there are sometimes 5, 6 or 8 people. Did you count yourself how many musicians you have?
- Now again… 6! Honka has just said that he wants to take care of his schoolwork instead of playing guitar in Korpiklaani, so now we are forced to continue with only two guitars again. Also the percussionist Ali is not on the gig line-up anymore, because he has got a child and now he wants to live a regular family life for a while. But it's ok, because our band is so big. Still we are six guys in the band so it won't destroy our sound and image anyway. But Hittavainen, Matson, Cane, Arto, known to you Juho are still staying.
- There are 2 guitars left, but which ones! The beauty! One’s sounding board is a scull of a cattle. Where have you taken it from?
- It’s more work of art than good instrument. Nevertheless they sound quite good. They are done by Kimmo Nissinen. I even wanted to buy it, but it’s too expensive. It’s given to us for some time – they suited our image very well!
- Some of you are barefoot on the photos – is it also an image or you simply don’t have enough money?
- Alas! We are waiting for author's emoluments!
- And that dugout on the back? It is funny of course, but don’t tell me that you live there…
- No, it is museum! These photos made in Finland, on the island Roskala. All its territory is a great museum of viking’s life. By the way, it’s incredibly interesting place!
- Also, I watched your video and it amazed me. Where have you taken so much colourful actors? I mean this dancing peasants, a man with accordion… Kusturitsa is resting!
- We just received rights for using fragments of a very old film, from which only 18 seconds remained. This is a picture of Kalle Kaarny “Ei Aauta Itku Makkinoila” 1927. Old and modern shots were easily mounted on computer. And people dancing in the video are from that film. And small accordionist too. To think about it, if these people were alive today, they should be 200 years old. Surely they didn’t expect that they would be dancing in the video of a folk-metal group and Japan Music TV and Deutsch Viva would be able to see them. This way we raised them from the graves.
- In the end of this video you go upstairs and go away… Where?
- At home, of course! Didn’t you notice where this door leads? To our home – in the dark forest!

I found an interview I didn't see before, it's a bit older, it's from Neo-zine, an American web magazine: Korpklaani (Folk Metal) Neo-Zine: Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about Korpiklaani Korpklaani: I`m Jonne Järvelä- Singer and guitarist of Korpiklaani from Finland. We use lots of weird folk instruments with the basic metal instruments. Korpiklaani sounds quite happy, fast folk metal music. Neo-Zine: What are some of the instruments that you use that are not used in traditional metal line-ups? Korpklaani: There is jouihikko, estonian bagpipe, kantele, violin, shaman drum and other percussion, different kinds of winds and flutes. Neo-Zine: Do you use any historic/ traditional folk songs from Finland in the construction of your songs? Korpklaani: On the Spirit of the forest, our earlier album was one trad song "Juokse sinä humma" but on the new Voice of wilderness" album the material is ourselves. Neo-Zine: It’s a bit refreshing to get a metal album that does not have any death/ black metal influences. Are you trying for a cleaner, more user friendly sound? Korpklaani: I growed with the 80`s heavy metal music so I`m not so into death/black metal. I like to listen to it sometimes but I don`t want to play it. This musical line looks like us. Neo-Zine: Is there ever traditional folk dancing at your shows? Korpklaani: Yeah, there is very traditional black dressed, longhair dudes jumping around it and diving from the stage all the time. It`s part of our shows that people goes grazy. It`s dangerous mix that happy fast metal music. Neo-Zine: Have you played any big festivals? Korpklaani: Not so very big. Some of middle size fests. I hope that we get some bigger festivals now after second Korpiklaani album. Neo-Zine: What’s this I hear about the President of Finland getting a copy of one of your recordings? Did you get any feedback? Korpklaani: Yes, it was funny accident We played on the Faces festival and my 9 years old son was there selling our cd`s. We saw that the President Tarja Halonen came with adjutants and several tv cameras to the place. I said to the son that give one cd to the president Tarja also. He went to her and gave the album but he asked money also Tarja pays it from her own pocket. It came out through main tv news at same evening. It had not been in any way considered event. Neo-Zine: I suspect that your band would be more fun in a bar/ pub than anywhere else in the world. What do you think? Korpklaani: Pretty true. Only bad side with that is that we have many players so the stages at bar`s are always too tiny. Neo-Zine: Reading your web-room, I saw that you are not afraid to be labeled as “yokels,” care to expand on that? Korpklaani: We are some kind of rednecks because here in Finland is not big towns at all. This is full of forests and fields so that`s what we are and it sounds in our music too. Neo-Zine: Do you guys really live in the woods? (I live surrounded by woods on top of a mountain ) Korpklaani: Actually I lived in a very deep woods when we made our last album but my wife was there like a prisoner if I was out of the house because she didn`t have driving licence. We had to move little bit nearer the food shops. But we are surrounded by woods here as well. Sounds cool that your living on the top of the mountain. You have to invite us to your mountain when we get our first U.S. tour !!! Neo-Zine: Have you been getting radio play? Korpklaani: This kind of music is not so radio friendly but nice to get even some of it time by time. Neo-Zine: Tell us about your video. Korpklaani: We made the video from the song Hunting song. The video producers got rights to old partly destroyed film material. It was 1927 filmed movie called "Ei auta itku markkinoilla". Only 18 seconds saved useful film and it is all on the video. It`s greast because atmosphere is same through the video. Old and new shootings hand in hand. Everyone can check it out and download the video from our website`s forum section. So just join to the forum and let`s talk some more ! www.korpiklaani.com
