I think it is time to start a thread about Tervaskanto reviews, since there get more and more, and the 'upcoming album' thread becomes a mixture of everything. So, the first one in this thread is a Belgian review in kwadratuurI made a quick translation: The woodclan is back! These great Finns were held in high esteem already at their debutalbum by every lover of cheerful, heavy folk-influenced metal, and this won’t be any less when they hear Tervaskanto (old man). The triumphal procession of these gentlemen continues neatly thanks to an album that is a little faster, a little more cheerful and a little better than their last one. And that is how it should be. Traditionally it starts with a glorious drinking song, in this case the suitably named song ‘Let’s drink!’. Just like when listening to ‘Beer Beer’ and ‘ Happy Little Boozer’ this brings images in mind of scenes of happy Finns around a table with frothy beers. This song will be shouted along without any doubt on festivals and gigs. De irresistible nature of Korpiklaani is in the unique mixture of folk and metal. While Finntroll is definitely more metal than folk, Korpiklaani does it the other way around. This music also has more authenticity, because almost half of the band plays real traditional instruments, under which a violin. That can be beautifully heard in songs like ‘Liekkiön Isku’ or 'Karhunkaatolaulu'. This also proves that there is a lot of good beer required to pronounce these titles, if you are not a native Finnish speaker. The catching melodies (from guitars, violin, flute or other) run in a sweeping pace along the dazzling ears. The decision of Korpiklaani to sing most songs in Sami ( ), gives some extra credibility. Ugly, screaming singing has not to be feared, because foreman Jonne sings slightly raw and the rest of the band shouts irresistible along during the choruses. At the happy tunes of these gentlemen it is almost impossible to stand still or not to mosh. This unusual and irresistible collective continues to release one glorious album after another and gets luckily also more and more the recognition they deserve. It is important that these musicians are clearly convinced about the kind of music they make. That many people get so happy by this music, is a great bonus. Guy Van Campenhout

There was also a Dutch review at podiuminfoA quick translation: Since a few years Holland is bombed by Finnish folk-metal bands. One of these calls itself Korpiklaani. This band is famous for their attractive live-performances and their swinging humppa-metal that makes you want to jump along each song. Tervaskanto is the fourth folk album, and already from the first song it is totally clear: Korpiklaani still rules! This album brings from beginning to end to the listener the same as the former ones, folk melodies wrapped up in a metal jacket. Characteristic for this band is the use of various instruments like violin and flute already since their first album. On Tervaskanto this shows off a little more than on their former albums, and makes that the 11 songs of this album are also again a little better. Like on all their albums, Tervaskanto contains a couple of danceable party hits. Let’s drink, Veriset äpärät and Tervaskanto will make people partying without any doubt, when heard live. Still Korpiklaani keeps the head cool and varies with some calmer songs that unfortunately don’t contribute much to the album in the whole. The cd comes with an extra disc on which the live performance of Korpiklaani at Wacken Open Air 2006. I don’t have that disc as yet, but I was at that show and this is guaranteed 45 minutes of the uttermost partying. To all Korpiklaani-fans: this is compulsory stuff. To everyone who does not know Korpiklaani: run to your music shop and listen Tervaskanto! Socke: frothy = foaming I already sent that guy a mail about the Sami language, it looks so unprofessional. Now i have to get back to my work *sigh*, translating a book, the other way around (english to dutch)...

and one in German SchwermetallI don't have time to translate this one one, maybe someone else can do it, but the conclusion is clear: 'Hard to defeat, and obligated to buy!' Made a (hopefully understandable) translation of that review: With deep gratefulness the folk metallers on this planet receive the fourth stroke of the Finnish humppa metallers Korpiklaani, which was only a short year in coming after the hammer album “Tales along this road”. Singing and dancing, raising the filled mead horns and partying joyfully, the “clan of the forest” visits us, brings eleven new chapters of Nordic lifestyle with it and leaves – when the dust dies away – content faces everywhere.
Who has seen Korpiklaani once live knows what flows of energy pours down from the stage on the folks – and also in the case of “Tervaskanto” the song material possesses the necessary portion catchiness that can carry the audience in droves. Already in the beginning the album’s highlight is to be found in the form of the title track, which belongs to the until now strongest and most ingenious recordings of the band’s history. It’s the flute which doesn’t dominate only this piece and brings the mood to the boil in combination with accordion and catchy guitar lines. In constant accelerated pace they run around the bonfire as if they superflously wanted to show the listener that there obviously isn’t any moment of weakness in terms of their dynamism. Also they didn’t permit themselves any lapse concerning the compositions’ creative execution, which thanks to the impressively complex song writing and the a bit different instrumentation don’t show any weakness and let the Finns grow to the the leading power within the genre. So are excessive instrumental parts and mostly cheery singing the bearing elements of “Tervaskanto” – nothing else was to be expected. Also the powerful quality of the recording doesn’t show anything new and tops off this metallic flight in a worthy way.
If one needed other words to describe the material of Korpiklaani, it’d seem reasonable to suspect that we’d have to deal with a drop in performance. But as “Tervaskanto” continues the previous albums’ tradition at full volume, even without any detailed description every fan knows what awaits him: The best what folk metal has to offer at the moment! Hard to defeat, and obligated to buy!

Hey I thought Tervaskanto would be only released the 29th June , I could buy it already the 20th June (I got the limited version). What happened? DVD: - really nice to put such a long video as extra - the video quality is a bit poor - the crowd is shown too much, I want to watch the band and not the fucking crowd - be careful with the special effects like slow-motion, it can ruin the whole stuff if you use too much ( I recommend not to use it at all ) But as an extra it is really a good stuff! CD: I love it, every song is fantastic!

A short review I found in the Belgian MindView magazine (No. 140), it was lying around on Graspop. I took it with me, here is the translation: Korpiklaani – TervaskantoKorpiklaani, our favorite Finnish folk metal clan from the far North, released a new silver disc. I hardly could not wait to get it. Tervaskanto is the title of the precious little thing, and it is the fourth release of this band for Napalm records. The album continues almost totally in the line of its ancestors and is in that way no disappointment at all. The emphasis is still on fast humppa combined with accordion, violin and flute. It is so inflammable that you are totally in the rhythm after the second note and cannot let go until the CD ended. There are some minor differences between Tervaskanto and the former album ‘Tales along the road’. The pace is somewhat higher and there is less part-song (singing together). No problem, there are still many quiet moments on the new album to give rest to the neck muscles and get ready for the next humppa song. Also remarkable is that the majority of the songs is in the Finnish language, now we can only wait for the forest clan to produce an album totally in Finnish. The themes have not changed however and deal with woods, wolves, bears, ghosts, traditions, legends and… parties! That tradition also stayed on this album: there is at least one song about beer and parties on Tervaskanto, in this case the opening song ‘Let’s drink’ - Sköl! Gold (6/7)A German review hereHope for a German volunteer for translation
