hehe ;D I must admit that I love those too. My main source is however the old and trusted Wikipediamaybe some of the Finnish members can add some that are not in this.

someone once told me that there is a finnish saying, that when someone can't understand something, he says "this is like hebrew to me" (like when americans say "this is like greek"). that's pretty funny (well, for me) as I come from israel and naturally i speak hebrew.. :}

Perkele What does it mean....?

Perkele What does it mean....? perkele:"Sielunvihollista, pirua yms. merkitsevän perkele-sanan vastineita ovat inkeroisen ja karjalan perkele sekä viron põrgu 'helvetti, manala'. > Eng.transl. "The equivalents for the word perkele meaning arch-enemy, devil etc. are perkele in Ingrian and Karelian, and põrgu 'Hell, Hades' in Estonian. The Votian word perkele has been explained to be loaned from Finnish or Ingrian. According to the generally most accepted comprehension, the word perkele is originally a loan word from the name of the Baltic god of thunder, that is Perkunas in Lithuanian, Perkons in Latvian and Percunis in old Prussian, although the Finnic words do not correspond pronouncially to the Baltic originals. On the other hand there are so many variants of the word perkele existing, thus it's nearly impossible to trace back to the most original form. In addition, in some Finnish dialects there's a form perkuna existing as well, closely reminding the Lithuanian word. Also Germanic loan-explanations has been presented. However, in the Finnish literary language the word perkele has been met since Mikael Agricola. There are many "It sounds like <insert language>" sayings around the globe. Eg: in Dutch they say something sounds Chinese if they don't understand.
Any more of these from other places?

Great link! But it's not the only one of this type. I had some bitter experience with such "polite words". In my fave Bulgarian forum I made a thread "Finnish heavy metal and hard rock". I must write that the rules are very strict. Everything was fine, many posts,groups,etc. and there began to appear words in Finnish, lyrics, which is O.K. But one "very witty" guy demonstrated his great knowledge in Finnish with writing a "selection" of curses. The boss GM is merciless - he considers guilty not only this who writes the post, but the author of the thread, though I can't moderate it. (The explanation is to make the forum members responsible not only for themselves.) The result was bann for the guy and high level of warning for me. I'm glad, that the thread was not locked, this GM is awful really. May be I survived, 'cause the sector GM is a friend and a fan of Finnish heavy metal.

Only jokes... humor makes heavy things often lighter to bear... I would use this to my love: I love you - Söisin mieluummin salmiakkia ;D About love, i like this one very much: Rakkauden tunne on kuin aurinko molemmin puolen. (To be in love is to feel the sun from both sides)

Hah, for a Finn this site is really, really funny! ;D Alright, maybe I am a bit childish here. I think it is funny though that Wikipedia would have a site like this.
