well, thanks, it has to sink a little in my mind, needs a little studying, but still The osaa thing... a fellow student of mine wrote that and that is where the question in essence started. The tough thing about the Finnish language is not just the different concept, but the different way of looking at things from time to time, and that combined with the impossibility of a one-to-one translation, or maybe i should say, not even a close possible translation, and then the lack of a Dutch-Suomi dictionary... together a bunch of troubles that make life unnessary hard ;D Luckily we have some experts here that can enlighten us! Thanks again!

There are a few things i do not understand in this poem, (no homework, reading it because i like to) maybe someone can help:
HAUTAUS. (Eino Leino)
Eellä ensin risti puinen, sitten pappi partasuinen.
Sitten ruumisvaunut, sitten lyhyt seura saattajitten.
Sekin kylmä, virallinen, vaikka varsin toverinen.
Soittokunta sotilaita! Ken nyt matkaa kuolon maita?
Painettien kylmä kärki vastaa, jos ei keksis järki.
Kuka? Yksi miljoonista valtakunnan kasarmista,
Puhuu tuima pohjatuuli, siintyy soittajankin huuli.
On nyt aamu Uudenvuoden. Tuonko tuli myötään tuoden?
Näky vaiko vertauskuva? Ei! Vain taulu unhottuva. - all that will be forgotten?
Hautaa vain nyt valtakunta poikaa kesken pohjan lunta.
Nimetöntä, suurta lasta kivääriä kantamasta. Marssimasta maita, soita, elon lyhyen louhikoita. ?
Vierryt lie hän Venäjältä. Täällä päättyi päivät hältä. What is hältä?
Kuka? Yksi miljoonista takin harmaan kantajista.
Niistä, joiden hartehilla mahti maan on mahtajilla. From them, on who's shoulders the power of the world rests? I know this is not correct, but hard to understand...
Soitto soi niin suruisasti. Katson kadun päähän asti.
Itkettäis, jos ilkeis. Huuli vavahtaa, käy pohjatuuli.
Siittää sydän mieltä monta, rakkautta rajatonta.
Myötämieltä miljoonien lumen alle painuvien.
Uunnavuonna 1914.

Näky vaiko vertauskuva? Ei! Vain taulu unhottuva. - all that will be forgotten? Yep. It's hard one. But it's something like: "The sight or the allegory. No! It's only a painting, forgotten." Marssimasta maita, soita, elon lyhyen louhikoita. ? "Walking trough the lands, swamps, ruggedness of short life" Vierryt lie hän Venäjältä. Täällä päättyi päivät hältä. What is hältä? "He may wander in Russia(far away lands). But the days(life) in here are taken away from him" Niistä, joiden hartehilla mahti maan on mahtajilla. From them, on who's shoulders the power of the world rests? I know this is not correct, but hard to understand... Mahtajilla is the hardone in this one. It means the god's or lord's..

Hi, I do not speak any Finnish myself so for understanding Korpiklaani's Finnish lyrics I am entirely dependant on the internet, and even then it's sometimes hard to understand So I have two little questions, and would be very glad if anybody could explain: I found that Salon, korven klaanin, Kourat kontioisen Salon, korven klaanin Vuorten voima ranteissain Salon Korpiklaani Salon Korpiklaanimeans Clan of the forest, Clan of the wilderness, Hands of a bear. Clan of the forest, Clan of the wilderness, Strength of the mountains. Clan of the wilderness Clan of the wildernessI thought that Korpiklaani was "Clan of the forest", but then what does "salon" mean? and what is the difference between "korven klaanin" and "korpiklaani"?

I thought that Korpiklaani was "Clan of the forest", but then what does "salon" mean? Salo is a synonyme for a forest or wilderness. In Finnish we have many words for forest/wilderness, such as metsä, korpi, salo, erämaa, kusimetsä, sydänmaa, ikimetsä, lehto, aarnio, aarniometsä, metsikkö, näreikkö, vesakko, viidakko, viita, kaira... This kinda expression, like Salon, korven klaani is very hard to translate from Finnish to English, so that's why it's translated as Clan of the forest, clan of the wilderness. The translations are all more or less very rough and free-handed translations, since the only function to them is to show non-Finnish speakers what's the songs are about. and what is the difference between "korven klaanin" and "korpiklaani"? Korpiklaani = nominative form, "Clan of the forest". Korven klaanin = genitive in both words, "Forest's clan's"

Thank you! I know translations are usually only rough but I tend to want to get to the bottom of things So as I understand it "Salon Korpiklaani" is kind of like "Forest's, wilderness' clan".

In that very expression, namely Salon Korpiklaani, the definitive translation would be Forest clan of the wilderness.

Could somebody please translate "omenavarkaisiin" to me? "To steal the apples" When I was a kid, about 8-10 years old, we used to do that a lot with my friends. We picked up some house, where was a big apple tree full of big fat red apples. We run quickly to the tree, dug some apples we could get - and then run off very quickly, before the angry man of the house could reach us, heh.. ;D I guess this is the small evildoing that every young kid in Finland has done at least once in his life, heh.. ;D I founded on the web the longest finnish word?: järjestelmällistämättömyydelläänsäkäänköhän can anyone tell me what it mean? The actual longest word in Finnish is epäjärjestelmällis tyttämättömyydellänsäkäänköhän My very good friend Kuuraparta, who once used to be in this forum also, wrote a long and good explanation about that word in the Languages -topic. I dug it out and I print it here:

Oh, I could think of so many haha. My first one shall be:
What does Runamoine mean? Or is it just a name?
And also: is (the song) Kirki in some archaic form of Finnish? Someone once told me it was.
