The scandavian countries sound very exotic to me. I'm from Sydney, Australia and I have seen our native animals in zoos, but not in the bush. I have been to two other major cities in Australia but have not travelled around the country.
I'm very ignorant about the geography of the rest of the world - where all the countries are and what is next to each other. I think this is because Australia is so isolated, we don't have close neighbours to learn about.
I went overseas for the first time last year to Borneo and Brunei. They are beautiful places, very lush rainforest and orang-utans! I would love to go back to Borneo and spend some more time there.
Australia is only 200 years old, so we have no history here at all. I think the history of other countries would fascinate me.

regarding the castle, i study in that city, so i can see it everytime. but we still have a lot of castles. the oldest i know is more than 2000 years old(i think the guide told me that is was more than 3000 years, but i find it strange), if considered the roman ruines inside it. the castle is suspected to have been built in the X century.
i always enjoyed the opera house, because of its technologic meaning. :]

Almost by accident I just came back from a Dream Trip indeed.
Granada, Spain.
Beautiful, beautiful city. Great nightlife, lots of youngsters from all nationalities. Huge monuments, great Muslim feeling to it. All in all, a very good surprise indeed.
Apart from Barcelona (which really isn't spain anyway, hehehe), this is definately the best, most interesting Spanish city I've visited so far. And I've visited quite a few I might say...
Planning to go back next year.

D'uh, your history is way longer than in many European countries, you've just driven it to live on deserts and just a few decades ago you still classified it's supporters as animals. Americans did the very same thing to their continent's native people and that's why they don't have a culture at all nowadays. And no, hamburgers and monster trucks doesn't work as a "culture". Too bad that people aren't interested in fixing these things at all, australian aboriginals and indians would have so much to give to the rest of the world

^^^^^^^^^ What he said.
The primordial cultures of America (Both north and South) and Australia and Oceania in general are incredibly ancient and have a connection to nature and everthing around them that we can't even begin to grasp if you ask me.
The Australia you claim to be "only 200 years old" is the european Australia that culturally really has no big history, but there is much more to culture, history and mythology than just Celts and Vikings.

True. My non-PC-inclusive language has caught me out again.
I should have been specific about the context of my response.

Today I met a man (at the Viking gathering) who told me that he did a small Kalevala trip. During a few months he visited by foot a series of places that are mentioned in a part of the Kalevala. I would not say that I would insist on walking...but this trip would be great! He also walked from Oslo to Trondheim ( in 5 weeks) and he visited Lapland several times (not by foot). He is planning a visit to the northern parts of Russia to visit authentic music groups... Sometimes people are amazing and do amazing things!

I have a friend who every summer portages and canoes from Ontario, in the south to Nunavut(Land of the Midnight Sun in Inuit) and lives completely off the land which I am planning to do. She's got biceps on her like there's no tomorrow.
