Alexandre Dumas: The Count of Monte Cristo & Edgar Allan Poe's Collected Poetry. Never read the count of monte cristo... shame on me. Specially 'cause I LOVE XIX'th century novels. I'll probably buy and read it in French. Or try at least... I don't trust translations. Edgar Allan Poe: ....beautifull. Alone, The Raven, Lenore... both the poetry and the short-stories are brilliant. Still reading Paulo Alexandre Loução's esoteric ravings in Portugal: Land of Mysteries.

i think my bro has read already that one. i cant stand it. What you can't stand, the book or the phenomena around the book? I thought the same as you, but three summers ago I read the first book and it hooked me so much I read the following three in less than three weeks. Ok, they're not masterpieces of literature, but I think each kind of book has its moment and sometimes you don't want to read something very deep. Is The Da VInci Code a bad book just before it's so much sold? I don't now, I haven't read it, but I'll do. Dickens was thought to be a bad writer 'cos he sold so much and fuck, he was fucking good, Great Spectations is a great novel! NOt becoause it is so much sold signifies that a book is not good, that's a mistake that I think everybody commit, me the first. When I want to read something deep I read Arthur MIller's Cancer Tropic, or Faulkner's The Sound And The Fury, but later on I want something not so much intellectual because I'm not a fucking wise at all, I just read because I like, and so I find as much worthy to read Harry Potter than François Villon poetry or Conrad's THe Heart Of darkness. Oh, I forgot, I'm also reading Paulo Coelho's THe Warrior of Light, supposse you now about it, Silvio; a great book!

Oh I hate Paulo Coelho... hehehehe. And it's not because of how much he sells. Just don't like his style of writing... good stories but completely devoid of flare...
The other books you mentioned Davem, I read all of them and I say, of the whole lot, The Heart of Darkness was my fave.
About Harry Potter - the woman knows just what she is doing. I also read all the books published so far (most of them in a day or two) and I say: she is not a great writer, but she knows how to write an addictive and hooking storyline... got to give her credit for that. Still, not my cup of tea... I read 'em more out of cultural interest, because of the whole phenomenom and ended up liking it far more than I was expecting, but still doesn't convince me.

Hehe... Davey Jones... Who? JK Rowling? Sethlad: hey, that Loução's works sound interesting! What's that? A tour through places of Portugal where strange and paranormal things have happened? There is a Spanish book called "X Files in Spain" that may be similar, I'm not sure of the author, maybe Iker Jimenez.

Well, it's not X-files material.
He talks about the esoteric and symbolic past of Portugal, the places, times and symbols with great esoteric meaning and significance. He refers often to the templars and the esoteric legacy of portuguese mentality. The thing is, he talks about a lot of interesting subjects, and raises very pertinent questions and doubts about things most people took for granted or had no idea about. But his conclusions are... well... unorthodox to say the least. He's very inclined to the esoteric side of things and the "mystical" strength of them, so he often makes some clouded and hasted judgements. In doubt, he always opts for the stranger explanation of a phenomenon and sees intricate and occult connections between every little thing and the history of Portugal.
Even so, it's a great read. Specially the parts about the meaning of portuguese symbols and the symbolism of some "mystical" places here. You just got to read it with a critical mind, and not buy everything he raves about.
Loução has at least 4 books on the subject: "The Templars in the formation of Portugal"; "Portugal land of mysteries"; "The Secret Soul of Portugal" and "From the Templars to the New Quest of the Grail".

Ahum! More interesting then!! I really like that kind of books, although I don't let me fall in believing everything stated I suppose my interest in 'alternative' explanations comes back frome when I was a child and read Von Daniken books Maybe I can buy some Loução's book when I visit Portugal (we haven't had that much time to plan lately).

Well i don't like Paulo Coelho's style! But he is a immortal (member of Brazillian Academy)!
I appear in one of his videos! In Rio de Janeiro at copacabana beach, drinking some beer and smoking one cuban cigar! ;D After that i was in Rock in Rio 3 in front of Iron Maiden!
Great moments!
Well back to books! One great book that i read is "Brave New World"!

Yeah, great book, I had to read it in secoundary for an optative class on psichology; I remember arguing with the teacher about the Ford that was a kind of Christ in the book; she said it was a psichologist, and I argue that it was Henry Ford, the inventor of production in line (is it said like that?) but she never admitted I was right. THat book was really good, and I get very angry when I saw a film with Wesley Snipes and Stallone which was something as "inspired" on it. About Coelho, I must see that video! great moments indeed, what you say! I've never read anything about Coelho but my father was given that book, the Warrior of light and I started reading it, and well, I like that metaphisical tone, and I think is very valid for today's sciety; anyway I don't think even Coelho drives himself this way. In fact the book is a propper reading for those moments in which you're in the bathroom, any other way, yeas, maybe ot could turn a bit "heavy"

Brave New World is a true masterpiece... phenomenal.
But in the genre I much prefer 1984... it's devastating, never has a book left me so depressed. (this is a good thing, take in mind)
Paulo Coelho is great at gathering ideas from a lot of different people and then condensing them in one single book, easy to read and that doesn't make you think too hard. Me no like...
