So speaking of Finland.... Maybe someone can educate me a bit. What are some common Finnish traditions?? I suppose anything one can think of that kind of ties into the culture of Finland.

Well I think my dream to spend some time in Finland has just vanished. First I´m just a pupil, I´never worked in my life, so I´m not very useful for the job market over there. I can not find an organisation which could help me to get a job in Helsinki or whereever. All offers for young pupils. What a pity I would love to spend some time abroad in this beautiful country :/

How is Germany's Study Abroad programs for University students, Savi? I know here you can study abroad with only a little extra money than tuition, because your tuition for Uni where you life is covered for your Study Abroad, especially if their is a "sister" type University in the country you wish to go to. You should talk with various schools about their Study Abroad programs. I know that many of them set you up to stay either in a dorm room at a certain Uni (in Finland usually between Turku or Helsinki, perhaps a couple others), or you get to stay with a family for the year you are there. Food and other expenses are either a part of your tuition or they are taken care of by your foster family, usually of course in exchange for chores and the like. But perhaps it is different in Finland, I know that for american Uni's it is this way though. Back in High School a few people I knew went to Germany for 6 weeks to study and were just with a family during that time. And that was in high shcool, so prospects in Uni become much more possible. Don't give up on it Savi, it is your dream to go there, and so you should find a way to do it no matter what. I sadly know nothing about exchange programs to native Germans for other countries, but I can't imagine it being too impossible. If you can't do a study abroad program through your Uni, then talk with the Finnish universities directly or a Finnish ambassador or other party about studying in Finland without some exchange program. Remember, their education systems are free, even to foreigners, you only have to cover living expenses and the like. You can probably even see about getting loans of some sort to help you out, but on this I am not knowledgeable about. I too have a dream of studying in Europe for a year (hopefully more) as it is my plan to move to Europe. It will be hard trying to find a job there that I can be stable at and that will allow me, especially since I hope to be a Professor. But considering that there are tons of non-native professors in the states alone, I can imagine that for them to have made it where they wanted to, then it shouldn't be any more difficult for anyone else to do the same, myself and yourself included.

You can spend a year in Finland with Erasmus, as far as I know ... Although you should be enrolled in a German university. As for studying there (undergraduate studies), there's no university offering bachelor degrees in English, everything's in Finnish and Swedish (except Polytechnic unis, I think, but as I was not interested, I didn't make any research). The only exception is Uni of Helsinki and that's the language philologies ... but again, in order to get accepted you have to take the entrance examination in Finland and the quota for international students in most philologies is only 5 people (English phil. accepts 10 int. students).

That's not quite true, at least in Oulu you can study International business and education in English. About other Finnish universities I don't know. But apart from that I think it's quite easy to get to Finland for a year through Erasmus or even as a free mover (in that case you don't get any scholarship and have to organise things yourself such as finding a room), if your plan is to study.

Hey I have a question about Tarja Halonen ( I hope the name is right, too lazy to look for it) how do you think about her? I saw some videos on Youtube where she is not that beloved by the Finnish people. I don´t have a special picture of her, just some informatins from the internet. I´m very interested so maybe you have an opinion. I wasn´t sure whether I should post it here or in the political view thread.

Some people I know who don't like her are from the other side of politics, so that's not really much to do with her personally. And when that clown Berlusconi mouthed off about her and Finland a few years ago - these same Finns immediately stood up for her. There are all sorts of videos on Youtube, I don't think it's a reliable place to gain this sort of information

I don´t use Youtube that often to find out more about Tarja. Youtube ist not the right way to inform yourself. I try to ask you for example or search on the internet. MUHA! But nice that you answered so fast =)

Hi guy's, I hope someone can help me. I will be visiting Finland next September. I will be flying to Kuusamo and then I will be spending a week out in the woods on a horseback trail. Though I need to know what is the weather generally like there in September and how bad are the insects Is anyone familiar with that region? I could not find much about the climate and "Mosquito's" in the net.

I can tell you that I was in the far North (Inari) in mid july (the worst time for the mosquitoes) and it was very bearable (not the complete hell the books describe). I had a strong spray for horse and it was enough to keep them away (with long sleeves t-shirt). So I don't think mosquitoes are really a problem.

I had a strong spray for horse and it was enough to keep them away (with long sleeves t-shirt). So I don't think mosquitoes are really a problem. I've travelled through Asia and other tropical regions... camped out in mangrove swamps and rainforests, for weeks at a time... I thought I'd seen the worst of the insect world until I went to Lappi in July . That horse spray must have been seriously good stuff , because the mosquitos near Utsjoki, and further south along the Iijoki near Oulu, nearly carried me away. I was surprised at the variety - big ones, small ones, fat ones, ones which could bite me through my clothes. Some of the bites even became a little bit infected. Hence why they sell those "Finnish Air Force" t-shirts in the souvenir shops. It's for a very good reason
