It has come to my attention that the piss-water known as Beer has now taken over as humanity's drink... of choice. Being the young, hard headed bastard I am, I refuse to drink enough to gain the ''acquired taste'' and enjoyment out of the beverage. Why? Because I, and many of my kin, have discovered the drink of our fathers.
There were days before the pubs and bars of our years when Mead Halls where that which called a man from the warmth of his bed. Be it a night after work, or a dawn after battle, Mead has appeased the tongues of Knights, Nobles, Viking Hordes, Peasants and all sorts of folk since before the coming of Hesus Christo. The reasons are quite simple.
ONE! While the average beer contains 6-10% alcohol, sometimes less, the average mead boasts 13-17%, often times more. (It gets you more happy more quickly)
TWO! The taste! There is no comparing a hops-inspired flavor to that of Honey. The sweet taste mingles with the alcohol to dance 'round ones mouth till they are passed the fuck out. It is, quite simply, delicious.
Now, I am contemplating making it my life long goal to spread mead throughout this disgrace of a country I call home, and hopefully the world. But, if I forget this by morning or simply decide not to, I'll at least spread the word to you, my friends.
Fuck beer. DRINK MEAD!
PS. - I've tried four kinds to date. Pear Mead tasted like straight vodka. Ouch. Dry Mead wasn't much better. A hops-and-honey combination still tasted like beer, just a bit sweeter. But SWEET MEAD... Truley the drink of champions.

It has come to my attention that the piss-water known as Beer has now taken over as humanity's drink... of choice. I didn't read any longer because I feel personally insulted about this! What ignorance! Arrogance! Sure, those cheap Budweisers and Heinekens are good only for soothing your thirst, but one should not judge all the noble beers because of those! You ask people to have tolerance on mushrooms and whatever obscure witches' brews, yet you have no taste for the great joys of malted barley and chosen hops! Args, I demand a duel!! ( ;D) And btw, finns have drank beer for a good few milleniums when all the european thights -wearing and harp-playing berry pickers drank their poor quality mead. Actually I love mead a lot as well, it's just impossible to get any real mead in Finland nowadays. They sell only this "vappusima" which is basically just soda. I once had a proper mead at Sweden (can't remember the brand) and it was awesome. But still, saying "fuck beer" is almost like saying "fuck water", there are endless tastes of those both

The only mead I've tried was brewed in someone's house. It was a little sweet, but good. As for beer, most of what you can get where I live isn't great. The local brand, Shiner, is pretty good, though. The big trend with a lot of people I know is to drink beer that tastes like anything but - pumpkin, chocolate, maple, whatever. Yech.
Going off on a tangent here, but I wish I could get German Apfelwein here. I loved that stuff!

I feel very much the same as Nordis. You should not give your reckless and a somewhat thoughtless opinion about beer in general before you've tasted some quality beers. Nowadays I've myself found some quality British beers very tasty and I've bought them everytime as I've had the chance. My old favourites are of course the dark Czech beers and East European beers in general, but the British beers have now become beside to them. Check out, if you ever have the chance! Besides.. If you ask me, it's not a true mead if you buy it from the store. You have to make it by yourself - as it has been the custom. I've made my own-made mead with good success two times already plus the averige wappusima in every wappu. The crap they sell at the stores as mead in Finland is awful - it should be banned with a law. And yes, in Finnish traditional folklore, you can find more runo-songs from beer than mead. We have a mythical song called Oluen synty (the Birth of Beer). One variant of it can also be found from Kalevala. Mead is more of this Germanic thing, brought to us much more later than beer. What comes to namely Finnish beers, we have actually some very delicious strong beer called sahti, specially in the province of Häme and specially in parish of Lammi. Sahti is very strong beer (from 8-14% alcohol) the true drink for woodland barbarian! ;D

I have always heard that beer is very very old, of course mead also feels old, so i went to the Wiki - the source of all knowledge: and The invention of bread and beer has been argued to be responsible for humanity's ability to develop technology and build civilization... just as i thought! ;D Personally i do not like mead so much, i like one glass, and then i have had enough, because it is so extremely sweet. Good beer i can drink always. I agree that there is some beer, that should not be called like that. But most beer is okay, and some very good. I had home made mead about three times, it is better, but still so extremely sweet, even the 'dry' variant. But i'd love to try again, you never know what to find... and sahti... i really want to try it next time in Finland!

I tryed for 3 times to do mead by myself, but I think there´s something wrong with the prescription, I can´t remember where I found that, but the only that I get is somekind of syrup, too sweet, I don´t like it so much, and here in Málaga I can´t find any mead, even in the stores, so, I have to drink beer and maybe one I will taste mead

The best mead I ever drank were in a tavern in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic. The mead was hot and very sweet, but you could drink many cups and you got no headache the next day. ;D But I prefer beer!!!! What could be better as a beer? Has anyone ever been Hypocras itself? I have only once walnut liqueur tried and it was very tasty....

I can't recall too many beers from USA that I have tasted, but if I were you I'd atleast give a chance to Anchor Porter by Anchor Brewing Co., San Francisco. Godly! I have no doubt that their other beers would be just as high quality and flavor. Besides.. If you ask me, it's not a true mead if you buy it from the store. The crap they sell at the stores as mead in Finland is awful - it should be banned with a law. That bottled "vappusima" should certainly go, but I think that those real bottled meads by real breweries are just as valuable as home made. Ofcourse, I've always failed at making mead by myself so I really can't tell how good it actually is, but if I am correct that it tastes more like that swedish bottled mead* than basic vappusima, then it must be awesome *(it was pretty much like a mix of kotikalja (a non-alcoholic sweet beer that is drunk with meals) and home-made vappusima)

Orca, I can understand your love for mead. It's great stuff and has a real taste, which isn't the case with most Dutch beers (even though all the world seems to like Heineken and Grolsch.. yuck).
But I'd have to say some beers are VERY good! Like Murphy's Irish Red, or Kilkenny, or 'kriek', the Belgian cherry beer ;D Ever had those?

so i went to the Wiki - the source of all knowledge: Quoted for truth. I have no doubt that their other beers would be just as high quality and flavor. I'll be sure to stop by next time I'm in San Fran. Odd city, but I'm sure I'll be there sooner or later. Thanks for the tip Like Murphy's Irish Red, or Kilkenny, or 'kriek', the Belgian cherry beer ;D Ever had those? Can't say I have, but now I've something to look for. My thanks It would seem I spoke too harshly about the malted hops beverage of old, and for this I do appologize. Still I stand without knowledge of a good beer, seemingly to no fault but my own. I will do my best to find and taste the drinks you've all spoken of. My heart, tho, still stands beside my mead.

Blasphemy! It's pure abuse to call any stuff made from berries or fruits as "beer" even if they were fermented and produced the same way. I once had some "banana beer" and even it was ok, it was more like a long drink. I demand a name protection for "beer"! High majority of finnish beers is really bad quality also. I think majority of all beers is like that just because it happens to be so popular and commercial. Even though the largest breweries in Finland bring new beers to the market every now and then, they all have barley starch added to them. Starch is used to replace some of the actual barley, thus making the taste milder while the alcohol percent stays the same. Milder taste -> bigger audiences. If I have to drink finnish commercially brewed beer, make it Lammin Sahti! Well, Finlandia Sahti does as well if Lammin brand isn't available. I was also surprised by Olvi Classic Chocolate Stout, it had nice dark chocolate flavor on it where all the other beers in their Classic series have tasted pretty much the same. Luckily it's easter soon, because the easter beers are my absolute favourites among the seasonal brews ;D
