This plea reached me yesterday. I think it is best to spread it, therefore i post it here. Dear All, below (in Finnish), with apologies for cross-postings, a link to the web address where you can participate in the plea to the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE. Since the digital YLE24 channel was closed down, the Sámi-language news are now broadcast on the Swedish-language (!) FST5 channel at irregular times around midnight, making it very difficult for Sámi speakers and people interested in the Sámi language to watch these news. At the link given below, you can join the (currently 434) people pleading for an appropriate programme slot for the Sámi-language TV news. BTW: You can watch the Sámi-language news broadcasts in the Internet on the YLE pages ( www.yle.fi, the server seems to be down at the moment...) *of course i signed this.

Listen up, a question for people from Helsinki. I'd love to visit this city and right now I'm looking for a hostel. Have anyone heard about one with resonable prices? Because theese one which I've found are not 'cheap enough' for me cheers!

Hi elizabeth This is where I stayed: Hostel Mekka Vuorikatu 8 B 00100 Helsinki Tel. +358 9 630 265 www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/HostelMekka-Helsinki-7204 I stayed in two rooms and both were presentable. The staff were extremely helpful and they did some laundry for me, which was wonderful after two weeks' travelling. The location is relatively central but set back from any main roads, so nice and quiet. And there's a great Irish pub around the corner! I also used this website to find some of my Finnish accommodation: www.hihostels.com/dba/country-FI.en.htm

Last yoik in Saami forests?www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWzPGi6FIsoIllegal logging in Saami forests The destruction of Saami home area in Finnish Lapland started again
The long lasting forestry conflict in Finnish Lappland is again in a very urgent state. The Finnish state owned company, Metsähallitus, has started large scale logging operations in the home area of indigenous Saami people on the 14th of May, 2007. These logging have been critisized for the following reasons: -there is no solution yet for the land ownership conflict between indigenous Saami people and the Finnish state. -the Finnish state has not proven to be the actual owner of the forests that it is logging right now. -the clear-cutting style of logging ancient forests in the extreme north of Europe cannot be accepted from an ecological and micro-climatical point of view. -the loggings destroy the very basis of the culturally important Saami free grazing reindeer herding tradition -the loggings waste the ancient forests and its wood and leave less possibilities for future truly sustainable continuous cover forestry without destructive clear cutting. Among others Union of Ecoforestry urged Finnish parliament to stop the logging immediately and distributed for parliament groups the documentary movie Last yoik in Saami forests http://elonmerkki.net). Until now there has not been any public reaction by the Finnish government. The silence in Finnish media also continues. The director of the movie, Hannu Hyvönen, expressed his feelings about the on-going loggings recently: " It is quite easy for us to update this sad turn-up in the documentary movie, but we cannot update these forests which are now again cutted down."The documentary movie can also be loaded here: video.elonmerkki.net/last_yoik... More info and links: elonmerkki.net/en---- The documentary is also very impressive... Spread this, please!

Today it is Happy Saamiday! Lihkku beivviin! God Samedag! February 6 is considered Sápmis official national day. Wish all Sápmi a good day, and most of all more recognition and the possibility to live their life as they want, and where they want.
