Our 'memorial day' is on the 4th of May, but when you speak about this i remember of course, among others, our forummember Crow, who died for the same things as many men in war.

Always remember our Soldiers If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.
And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. Thanks for the post disposablehero, it's a beautiful poem. We just had 2 minutes of silence to remember those who lost their live for freedom. From the Second World War, and after. R.I.P.

"The worst enemy of the Finns is melancholy. Over the millenia this endless apathy has overwhelmed every Finn. Once a year, at Midsummer, Finns defy their depression. They drown their gloom in beer, chase away melancholy with music, boosted by warmish Koskenkorva and grilled sausages. For one night, Finns enjoy their freedom, drown in lakes in euphoria, impregnate their women, raise hell, threaten each other with knives and believe that they are a happy race after all." (from: Hurmaava joukkoitsemurha)
In this sense: Hyvää juhannusta kaikille! ;D

We've had huge discussions recently in Sweden about the whole "national-day"-thing. The reason: We dont really care about it, or have any traditions around it. I think the main course for this is that we have been a free nation since 1523 (when a Swedish tyrant through out a Danish tyrant and put the country in bancrupcy (if that's the English word for being totally broke).
Any way: Most of us dont care, and most of us dont celebrate, and would instead prefer to see Midsummer's Eve as a national holiday, while we have tons of tradions of celebration that day.
Unfortunately the people in charge didnt agree, and now 2/3rds of the columnists and mediapersonalities are debating how we should celebrate a perfectly Swedish nationalday at the proper date.
It's all weird and very very 2007.
Apart from that: The most interesting Swedish holiday is probably Lucia (Im not sure whether Finns celebrate that as well). Basically we choose the cutest, tallest and blondest girl. Puts burning candles in her hair and dress her in a white gown and then she and leads a parade of girls in similar white gowns and boys with conic white hats covered in stars and they all sing. And we eat wheatbuns with saffron.

In germany we have on the 18th Nov. our Volkstrauertag. This is our memorial day. But in Nov. we have 3 memorial days. Allerheiligen, Totensonntag und Volkstrauertag. But this year is the problem that the Totensonntag is on the 11.11 and then starts here in Cologne the Karneval.

Yes, thats a problem because on Ts. you can´t make a party. But i´m sure that the most people here think Karneval is more important. So they will find a way to have partys. :-)
