Favorite bands:
Týr Metsatöll Korpiklaani Heidevolk Turisas Eluveitie Arkona Alestorm Ensiferum
Favorite Albums:
1. Eric the Red - Týr 2. Hiiekoda - Metsatöll 3. Ragnarok - Týr 4. Terast Mis Hangund me Hinge 10218 - Metsatöll 5. Iivakivi - Metsatöll 6. Korven Kuningas - Korpiklaani 7. De Strijdlust is Geboren - Heidevolk 8. The Varangian Way - Turisas 9. Tervaskanto - Korpiklaani 10. Vo Slavu Velikim! - Arkona
I like more or less every folk metal band that is very true to their roots and has a strong emphasis on history, but Týr, Metsatöll, and Korpiklaani are the three bands I like the most by far. Mostly because the members of all three bands are excellent musicians, very down-to-earth seeming, and seem like really great and hilarious people. The same could be said for the other bands on my list as well, but for some reason those 3 stand out more.
As for the albums, Eric the Red is my favorite because of the great traditional songs (Ramund hin Unge, Regin Smiur, The Edge, etc.) and the really great music on the entire cd. It was also the first folk metal album I bought, so that probably factors in too. Metsatöll's albums are all really solid as well, and the bass work on all their albums is definitely my favorite from anywhere. I like how TMHMH has a fast and heavy sound, Hiiekoda a more defined and smooth feel, and Iivakivi a technical and yet harsh feel to it. As for the other albums on the list, well they just stand out because of a perfect mixing of folk with metal with great lyrics.

Here's my list: Korpiklaani: They're the best in my opinion. I heard the Shaman albums around the time that Spirit of the Forest came out, and I've been hooked ever since. They're the only band from which I still wait for new releases, and have to get them just as soon as they come out. I still like Spirit of the Forest the best because of all the different musical elements in each song. Skyforger: I love Skyforger. The Latvian language is fascinating to me, and their music is just beautiful. I can't decide which album of theirs is my favourite at the moment, but I like them for a lot of the same reasons I like Korpiklaani, the main ones being that they use real folk instruments, have excellent musicianship and awesome vocals. I got to see them perform at Heathen Crusade 2. Vintersorg: I like all of his stuff, but his folk albums were the beginning of my obsession. Till Fjälls will always be my favourite, although I think his stuff would've been better if it had more folk instruments incorporated. Einherjer: I just always thought they were a lot of fun, and I got into them around the same time as Vintersorg when I was 17. Norwegian Native Art is an excellent album; the keyboard parts are great and pretty much every song is good. Moonsorrow: Honestly, I haven't heard anything after Kivenkantaja (like I said, I'm horrible at checking out new releases except for when it comes to Korpiklaani), but their first three albums are masterpieces. I could listen to Kivenkantaja over and over. I had the pleasure of seeing them at the first Heathen Crusade and it was one of the best shows I've been to. I'm sure there are more that belong in this list, but my head is starting to hurt from thinking too hard!

Forgive me for the post is too bulky - I have very many favourite bands. Here's the full list:
Folk metal: Chur. This project from Ukraine is one of the most authentic folk metal bands or projects I've heard. Cruachan. i have only two their albums - "Folk-Lore" and "Pagan", and they are really great; I also know that they started with black metal - so I'm interested in their stuff. Finntroll. They were one of the first folk metal bands I've heard, with the "Jaktens Tid" album, it really impressed me. Hantaoma. A great french folk metal band, with both members of Stille Volk on board. They've made only one album, it's called "Malombra". Highly recommended. Heidevolk. Great epic folk metal newbies. In Extremo. The first folk metal band I've heard. They had a gig in Petersburg in September 2008, I've went there, but i've overdrunk a little, so don't remember too much. Korpiklaani. No comments. Malnatt. Folk/black band from Italy - the song "Siamo Galli" rules! Metsatoll. Unfortunately, I have only one album of them - the first, "Hiiekoda". SatanaKozel. The Russian Finntroll. Check them out. Storm and their only album "Nordavind". Purely amazing Norway folk songs, and, of course, the best is "Oppi Fjellet". Svartby. This is a folk metal band from St.Petersburg, their stuff is influenced by Finntroll's. I added them here because of their gigs - when playing live, the band really knock you down to the ground. SvartSot - the newbies from Denmark, and their only album "Ravnenes Saga" - full of hit songs, and I want to mention the vocals - a really deep growl, similar to Johan's from Amon Amarth. Troll Gnet El' (or "Troll Bends Fir", in English translation) - this is not a metal band, they mention their music genre as "beer folk", this band's gig is a best choice for a guy who wants to go somewhere to booze and dance. Pure beer positive. Turisas. I've missed their gig in Petersburg, so I hope that they'll take another visit to Russian lands. Vintersorg. "Till Fjalls" is really magnificent, I don't like his later stuff very much. Wolfmare - another great band from Petersburg. Their second album has been released through CCP Records, so check them out. Yggdrasil - the Swedish melancholic folk metal band. Very atmospheric.
Pagan metal: Alkonost - the Russian band, with clean female and harsh male voices, and atmospheric keyboards. My favourite folk/pagan/viking band from Russia. Eluveitie - one more newbies, I guess everyone here knows who they are. A great mixture of melodic death and folk. Ensiferum - I can't get a point why they are considered as viking metal, in their lyrics there are neither Vikings nor Scandinavian gods... maybe that's because of their music? I've missed their gig, and my friends, who've gone there, say that it's been awesome. Hellveto. This is an orchestral pagan metal from Poland, the keyboards dominate in their stuff, they have even more keyboards than Graveland and Woodtemple. Majestic. Kamaedzitca - the pagan metal band from Belarus, it's really heavy (sometimes it's like death metal). Munruthel - the project of the ex-Nokturnal Mortum drummer, the first two albums are folk ambient, the third is a great mixture of sympho black and power metal. Primordial - one of the best pagan metal bands in my opinion, they're very original, no one plays like them... when you listen to them, you can feel, as the northern Celtic transcendancy rises up in you. Skyforger - one of my favourite bands. I've seen them live, and I'll never forget it. Svarga - the Russian pagan metal, great songs, and they use an accordeone. Thunderkraft - a heathen death/metalcore band from Ukraine. Simple but catchy riffs, and, of course, flute and violin...
Viking metal: Amon Amarth - I've started listening to extreme metal with their stuff. My favourite melodic death band, we've had their gig in January 30th, and i've crowd-jumped on the song "Varyags Of Miklagard". I really love their stuff. Asmegin - I'm really impressed with their first album, but I haven't heard "Arv" yet. Bathory. I love nearly all their stuff, both viking metal and proto-black. And, of course, it's a nostalgie, when I were younger and used to buy their pirate cassettes with tracklist printed... Enslaved - only the early albums, I can't get into their prog metal stuff. Equilibrium from Germany. One of the best epic viking bands I've heard. Falkenbach - I've heard them a few months ago, and was striked straight in the heart by their atmospheric landscapes. Graveland - I like their later albums, the epic viking metal ones - the earlier Darken's black works are not fully suitable for me. Manegarm - in my opinion, one of the best viking metal bands ever. Scald from Russia was a traditional doom metal band, with amazing clean vocals and viking themes in the lyrics. They have only one album, it's named "Will Of the Gods Is Great Power" I highly recommend this album for everyone open-minded (for example, if you like Candlemass, you'll like Scald) Solefald - I guess that they don't have viking themes in all the albums, but "The Icelandic Odyssey" is a real killer. Thyrfing is also one of the best viking bands - my favourite album is "Farsotstider", it's more grim than others, a best listening when you're in a bad mood. Tyr - what can I say... Hail To The Hammer! Windir... Valfar's death was a really great pity, they used to make really outstanding albums.
I've missed the folk/pagan/viking black metal and melancholic folk/pagan/viking bands (except Yggdrasil and Scald), because no one should have read this post to its end then... and I've missed many bands, who are nationalistic - I don't want to start a "holy war" here. If everyone's interested - I'll mention all them too.

I totally agree on Menhir, although in Germany we don't use the word "Viking" for German bands, of course, but call it "pagan". Yesterday I discovered a new pagan band (their album is now running without a break in my CD-player), but they probably are more interesting to German-speaking people, as their German lyrics are so strong and captivating. They are called "Waldgefluester" and their album is called "Herbstklagen".

Thank you Twilightheart.. You're right about Menhir, but l ,to be honest, sometimes mix the two genres because both are my favourite...l guess tis no problem with that. I'll search for the cd you've mentioned. Must say that most of the times l'm more into music than into lyrics...and if those are in German, l can understand parts or l just ask a friend to translate l'll play some Menhir now . Hailz &thrills!

Well I haven't heard much from folk/viking metal because I'm intersted in it for few weeks but my favourite albums are Tyr's "Ragnarok" and "Eric the Red", Alestorm's "Capt. Morgan's Revenge" and KK's "Korven Kuningas" I don't know other KK albums.
