- Monteiro can be the guard of the "mata" (well something like woods) 'Monteiro' probably comes from 'Monte' (mount/hill), no ? Like 'Cabrito Monteiro', the kind of goat who lives on hills. EDIT: I just saw that 'Monteiro' can also mean "Guarda de mata". Btw, 'cabrito monteiro' is not right. It should be 'cabrito montês'. I'm really surprised that people in Portugal speak "another" language. I checked with everyone I know and they all said that 'monteiro' should come from 'monte'. (Ai Jesus ! Estão a falar Português incorre ctamente em Brasil, opa !) ;D

don't worry, as here ppl normally would think the same.
the meaning of words doesnt change that much, just the pronounciation and the way they are written.

(Hope resurrecting this thread isn't a problem) My name is Vlad; it has a Slavic origin and means approximately "rule" (the noun). Historically, the name was first Vladimir "peaceful rule", but in Romanian it has become a name onto itself, Vlad. So everyone bow down ;D

My name is Ondřej Šimon (i wonder if you can read it properly) Ondřej is czech form of Andreas which means something like brave or strong.
The family name Šimon is jewish name which means "the listenning one", it is also the name of one apostolus.
My parents gave me this name becouse they like clasical slawish names (my father is Stanislav, my grandfather was Václav, after st. Václav (Wenceslaus), one of the first bohemians dukes and patron of Czech Republic.)

Digging ol'threads! ;D Some of you know about me already that I use Tiina just as a nick/shortened name, but the full is Valentina. It's easy to track meaning of it, as it's the feminine of the latin Valentinus, meaning healthy and strong, although if I remember well in High School I've learnt that it meant ''daring, brave'' (possibly my memory fails me). I like it btw ;D but would have been cool to have the earliest form of it , that is Valentia. Of course , there are many variants of it in many languages. Don't have another one, never wished to. family name isn't that important , but I was told once by a clever man that it has Bulgarian resonance, which I realised it's true , but dunno what ''kalitza'' means. Altough, from maternal side things are clear: it's Serbian origin; as for the paternal side, I know names of Serbian origin also, yet the one I bear too puzzles me a bit..anyway, it all seems to be of slavic origin.

I'm clad that some one is! ;D I think that most of the active users know that my real name is Arimo and Arivse is just a nickname over the internet (Its not my nickname in "normal" life, that would be Arska ) My name is old and very rare, only 900 or so has been named by that name here in Finland. It was "popular" at 1940-1959 when 3th of Arimos were born/named.. ;D But we are going endangered in 10 to 20 years.. Can't remember why it was given to me, but if my memory doesn't fail me here, it was something to do with my dads old relative from his fathers side. I think that it doesn't have special meaning like names usually have in countries with strong history. Not anything like on (Valen)Tina has My name is just a plain name, which is kinda normal to Finnish names.

Mine's Philipp, it's not a common name here, but it's pretty popular in other countries. What I can say about it? It's the name which you can imagine the biggest amount of jokes about, seriously. But the biggest joke is his damn meaning - it's a Greek word, and it stands for 'horse lover' Maybe there were no names for 'booze and heavy metal lover', so my parents have chosen this one. Damn horses!

My name is my nickname It's too rare even in Bulgaria, only in my native area in Central Bulgaria there are some other Noncho's. I've read some articles about this name in ancient Egypt, but I don't think it's connected with my name...
