I want to learn the Finnish language. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the "best" software, cd's, books? My aunt who is 95 is teaching me some but lives far away. My wife and I are planning a trip to Finland to visit the birthplace of my grandparents in Nurmes, Finland. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

There are more qualified people on the forum to recommend you better materials, but personally I have and like Agi Risko's material (and CDs!!!great stuff!) and they seem pretty good, except I've been too lazy to keep going with lessons. Good luck with all! www.amazon.com/Agi-Risko/e/B001IOFIUY

Thanks, Tiina. I'll check it out. I know several words and sentences then I hear the language being spoken and I get lost...haha

No worries. I know the feeling....all the phrases I learned, when going there it all reduced to ''kiitos'' and ''joo'' ;D which is why I gave up and just listened charmed how people spoke there, it was like a fairy lingo and I was simply enjoying the musicality of it. Either way, it's the easiest thing to learn, haha! EDIT: I intended to say it's NOT the easiest thing to learn.

Yes Tiina, for me it was exactly the same. Even today, even if I don't understand anything, is some of the most wonderful to listen to. I listen and I feel like my heart opens. There is so much Love.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Finland to visit the birthplace of my grandparents in Nurmes, Finland. Meanwhile I had time to look on interwebs at that place, checked the area (thank to the google Yellow man ;D )....Lovely area, it's such a great thing to go back to the roots, sort to say. Yes Tiina, for me it was exactly the same. Even today, even if I don't understand anything, is some of the most wonderful to listen to. I listen and I feel like my heart opens. There is so much Love. That's sweet.

Yes, Nurmes looks lovely! I talked with my aunt this evening on the phone and was rebuked several times for not rolling my "R's" when saying "NuRRRRRRRmes" and using my American accent...haha She also will be sending me letters from a relative from Nurmes that she has kept for many years. Sadly, my relative has passed. Hopefully I will locate some "long lost" relatives. I googled the family name and seems to have quite a few Hiljanens there.

Hahaha, the eternal problem. You should try RRRRRRolling Rs as many times a day to get it right. Must say you're lucky though, having relatives still and all these elements to put you in touch with your ancestry. Wish you good luck in finding your kin there!

Thanks Tiina! Finding family would be great! Finding family and attending a Korpiklaani show in Finland on the same trip would ROCK! Showing Korpiklaani my new Shaman Drummer Tattoo in person would be cool as well! Attachments:
