My nickname: "Swordmaiden" is a nickname my friends gave me as kind of a joke because people always assume I collect swords for some reason.
My avatar: It is just a picture of me in Old Norse clothing at an SCA event (Society for Creative Anachronism), which is a historical reenactment society.

forester it's... forester I'm a student of school of forestry. I love to go for a walk to forest; sometimes make fire and talk with my friends. A burning fire makes people closer; it's easier to talk then. so my nick is a part of my passion and avatar... I must find some appropriate avatar ;D

That's great to hear that you are student of Forestry! It was a field I always deeply wanted to get into, but eventually became more engrossed in history, language, and philosophy. So now I just stick to enjoying Forests in their own right. Fires and walks through the woods (or walks period) make talking much easier indeed. It can be hard for me to feel comfortable while talking with someone if there is not some movement involved, granted this is also due to my slight sense of ADD, haha. Perhaps an avatar of a tree, or a fire, or a tree on fire? haha, just kidding.

You know, I thought that it will be great to study somethig that I really interest in. But after two years of studying I must said, that sometimes school can kill Your passion. For me it's a pleasure, to read some book, or article about forestry, botany or zoology or something like this. I do it just because I like it. But if You have to read about something, what doesn't interest You, and You have to learn things that will never be usefull, You may start thinking "did I choose good way?" Then passion turns into a rut. And sometimes I'm thinking this way. Do You understand me? Is my english good enough to be understood? Cheers, Kamil.

Kamil seems like we have the same problem, like what's really important part of my study is understanding wildlife behaviour instead we get classes like communiction or first aid.

Kamil: your English is wonderful, no worries, but having said that if you ever need help with any particular aspect feel free to message me or post on the "General Language Questions" thread. And I understand you completely, that is EXACTLY how I feel. I'm not sure how it works in Poland, but in America you have to take "General Education" classes in College and University BEFORE you can focus strictly on your major area of study. So for 2-3 years (depending on how brave you are to take as many classes as possible or not) you must take irrelevant classes. Sure, it's good for some people who perhaps don't know what they want to do, and general education helps them get a taste for everything, but for someone such as myself who knows what he loves to do, and although admires the other fields of study has no passion for them, it is terrible. I admire Forestry, Botany, Biology, and all the other Physical and Life Sciences, but aside from Forestry I get too bored with the other stuff. I love studying certain aspects of them, but getting into detail my mind just can't function. I'm much more into metaphors, open-ended theories, and interpretations. But with Science you are stuck with "this is absolute fact and it is proved thus..." still intriguing, but not the type of thing my brain was wired to handle. Perhaps Maris, yourself, and myself, as well as any other member in a similar situation, can start some sort of club. A place to go and complain about how crappy those types of classes which we are not passionate about can be.

I'm happy, that You understand me In Poland is quite similar. Someone may don't know what he wants to do in his life. But ofcourse, there are many people, who know what they want to do, and they know which subject will be usefull for them. But unfortunately, very often, it is ignore by teachers, who argue, that You are young and you don't know what You could need in Your life. It's so annoying.

I certainly do understand! I hate teachers like that! Thankfully there haven't been many like that that I've seen. Then again I'm studying obscure subjects, and although they (advisors, not teachers thankfully) tell me "you'll have better job opportunities if you choose something else", the professors are all excited for my choice. Which brings me to something anyone can do: tell your professor you wish to be a professor someday, they will give you an unbelievable amount of respect. Particularly useful if it's a class you worry about passing, haha. Although thankfully I haven't had to deal with that yet.

I think I never actually posted here before The present nickname is rather self-evident if you read it phonetically. It's not some kind of grand statement I am making though, to me it simply signifies that I am what I am and wouldn't compromise my views. The avatar is myself with the skull of a ram.

Sista, I really wanted to post this for you (while I sing the chorus ;D ), and I use it now in honour of explaining to the others what your nick name means. I am glad you kept the avatar, btw! Best of your pix ;D and simply like the theatrical accents of the decorum. Ok, back to initial intention..welcome home!!!!!!!!!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZhmsgVqWUQ

Heer: I must admit that it was only a couple months ago that I really realized what you did with your nickname. I guess I didn't think about it that hard at first, haha. Nevertheless it's a great nickname, despite my delayed realization.

Aw spasibische, Tiina!! that made my night and what better way to say it than through the lungs of Bruce - who had just been the subject of my conversation not more than an hour ago. @ Anwend: Better late than never! ;D The added bonus of the nick is that when it's shortened, it's German for an army or a war host in general. That epic battle connection agrees with me as well Maybe for the native speakers it takes longer to crack down into the language acrobatics like that precisely because it's too familiar and thus is not always seen from the side? I notice that non-native speakers of a language tend to be more pedantically precise or else off-the-wall whimsical in its use, compared to native speakers. Debatable though.
