It doesn't have to be metal. But if it's not metal, please specify what it is. I would prefer mass recommendations of your absolute favorite CDs of all genres. Heck, I'll recommend a heap of mine while I'm at it.
Ayreon - Flight of the Migrator Borknagar - Epic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night OST [Videogame Music] Cyberya - Mindcontrol Death - Symbolic Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Trilogy [Classic Rock] Enslaved - Monumension Fates Warning - The Spectre Within Funker Vogt - Thanks For Nothing [Electronic] Green Carnation - A Blessing in Disguise [Prog Rock] Hollenthon - With Vilest of Worms to Dwell Impaled - Mondo Medicale Jerry Cantrell - Degradation Trip Vol. I + II [Grunge/Metal] Kamelot - Karma King Diamond - House of God KMFDM - Nihil [Industrial] Lake of Tears - A Crimson Cosmos [Prog Rock] Melotron - Sternenstaub [Synthpop] My Dying Bride - The Light At the End of the World Novembre - Classica Ocean Machine - Biomech Of the Wand and the Moon - Emptiness, Emptiness, Emptiness [Folk] Otyg - Sagovindars Boning Pain of Salvation - BE [Prog Rock] Primordial - Spirit the Earth Aflame Queensrÿche - Operation: Mindcrime Rage - The Missing Link Ram-Zet - Escape Rush - Signals [Classic Rock] Savatage - The Wake of Magellan Sigh - Hail Horror Hail Skyclad - The Silent Whales of Lunar Sea Slough Feg - The Lord Weird Slough Feg Solefald - In Harmonia Universali Switchblade Symphony - Serpentine Gallery [Gothic] The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium [Prog Rock] Throes of Dawn - Dreams of the Black Earth Tierra Santa - Sangre de Reyes Vader - Litany Vehemence - God Was Created VNV Nation - Futureperfect [Electronic] Winds - Reflections of the I Wumpscut - Music For a Slaughtering Tribe [Industrial] X Japan - Jealousy Your Shapeless Beauty - Sycamore Grove
That's all. Try to find some MP3s or samples by those bands. I tried to avoid putting a lot of folk metal on that list because I figured most people here listen to that type of music enough to get their own recommendations.
Ta ta.

Deep Purple is the best band. Ever. Machine Head (w/Smoke on the Water) is NOT their best- but then, you knew that. Fireball is their best, and my favourite, album ever.
Every collection needs some Dead Can Dance (Spleen and Ideal is tops)
Candlemass- all, esp. Nightfall Hawkwind- In Search of Space, Space Ritual (psychedelic/prog space rock) Moonspell-Wolfheart My Dying Bride-Turn Loose the Swans Paradise Lost-Gothic Anathema-Serenades, Pentecost 3, Judgment Mostly Autumn-For All We Shared Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards, The Magician's Birthday, Very 'eavy, Very 'umble (early 70s proto-metal) Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Northern Sky Primordial- Imrama, A Journey's End Skyclad- Prince of the Poverty Line, Jonah's Ark Warrior Soul- Drugs, God, and the New Republic Inkubus Sukkubus- Wytches, Heartbeat of the Earth (pagan rock) Fields of the Nephilim- Dawnrazor, The Nephilim, Elysium (the sound of the earth, stone, and water) King Crimson- Red Steeleye Span-Below The Salt (early 70s English folk) Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath, Vol. 4, Sabotage Led Zeppelin- II Neil Patterson- Christmas Favorites Samael- Ceremony Of Opposites
etc.............

Anglo-Saxon - good collection (my selection will probably overlap yours quite a lot!)
If it's folk you want, I would personally recommend anything that involves Ian Giles. He has a fantastic voice. A good starting point is Folk Music of England (there are a few cd's called this, look for the one produced for Past Times).
Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always (guess!). The Cult - Love (rock) The Damned - Phantasmagoria (punk/goth) Sentenced - The Cold White Light Charon - Tearstained For My Pain - Fallen To/Die/For - Epilogue Moonspell - Antidote Paradise Lost - Draconian Times My Dying Bride - Like Gods of the Sun Anathema - Alternative 4 Opeth - Blackwater Park Inkubus Sukkubus - Wytches Tenhi - Vare (folk/ethereal) Of the Wand and the Moon - Emptiness; Emptiness; Emptiness Naervaer - Skiftninger (folk) Arcana - The Last Embrace (ethereal/medieval) Voltaire - the Devil's Bris (goth/folk/gypsy/humour) Frostburn - My Scars (demo)(gothic-metal) Methonia - demo (Opeth-like)
hmmm, that'll do for now.
Edit: forgot one - Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress

Oh yeah, the CULT! I forgot to list them. I think I'm one of 6 people on earth who actually heard their last cd Beyond Good And Evil. It was really good, too. A bit weird IA is in the Doors now! Illumina, speaking of English folk, are you into Lindisfarne? They're another one of those bands which I'd like to investigate, but who have a looooong, daunting back catalogue. I don't know where to begin. I will look into Mr. Giles. Not literally, mind. ;D

*grin* I'll be another one of those six then! I heard Rise on the radio and had to get it.
I have the same problem with Lindisfarne, so afraid I can't help.....same goes for Fairport Convention. I have seen Brass Monkey live, so I can say they're worth checking out (one of Martin Carthy's bands so you don't need to me to tell you that!).
Ian Giles sings with the Oxford Waits, and has a solo cd called the Amber Triangle (I have yet to get any of that stuff, I'm broke right now!).

MaliceGarden: finally took the time to listen to MP3 samples of Realejo... very nice!!! Partially it reminds me of our Dutch celtic band Rapalje (f.i. music for a found harmonium is a 'song' they perform also) but partially it is more classical (classical music is another love of mine). Real nice band. Thanks!

In Extremo: the whole discography Subway To Sally: 1994, MCMXCV My Dying Bride: The Light At The End Of The World, Turn Loose The Swans Cradle Of Filth: Dusk and Her Embrace, Midian, I personally wouldn´t recommend that to others... maybe if you can get it free of pay.... but I wouldn´t advise anyone to give away money for it. (But that`s just my personal taste, as I said.)

I would recommend My Dying Bride if you like doom, but Cradle of Filth - not my cup of tea. The music's OK, but as soon as Dani starts screaming I want to garotte him.

I just ordered a cd of Amorroma, i only have heard one sample. It's a Belgian folk band, somewhat more classical.
