My current build wouldn't run that smoothly, but since it's at least another year away I suppose I could start selling off my personal belongings to upgrade! Not sure of the details, but if they continue free Battlenet we should start our own party! I think that would be awesome! So far there are 4 of us? Anymore for a nice war party? ;D @croc: At first I always played the Amazon -- spears kicked ass since you didn't have to move in close unless you ran out! For Diablo I it was the Rogue -- bow & arrows same concept! But with the D2 expansion the assassin character was just wicked fierce and viscious. I'm hoping for a similar class with D3. Bartbär: My best friend LOVES Starcraft. He tried to get me to play but I'm too deep into fantasy and not enough sci fi to appreciate it. He invested a lot of time into that game! I think Blizzard is by far the best producer out there. I'm happy they are finally taking a break from the WoW franchise and remembering us other folks!

I'm not sure if they are going to continue free battlenet. I would hope they do, but with 15 dollars a month for WoW who knwos what they are thinking with battlenet... Speaking of WoW, anyone seen the Southpark episode in regards to it? Absolutely genius and non-stop laughter, especially if you get the references. haha I'm more of a fantasy person too. But starcraft I love simply for it's simplicity, haha. Such a simple game, yet so fun and addicting. Thankfully I didn't get into it too much. I enjoy Life. Although I'd have to say that I prefer Bethesda over Blizzard. NOTHING beats the Elder Scrolls series, and even their other games are great (even the ones for the old old systems. ) But perhaps it's my ill-disposition to Blizzard products. In regards to assassin types, anyone else interested in the second "Assassin's Creed"? I thought the first was ok, but I was sad it didn't take place in Europe (Can't help it, when games involve swords and don't take place in Europe during middle ages, I get disheartened), and that you couldn't skip past cut-scenes (I absolutely hate cut-scenes in 99% of games: I save story-lines for movies. haha) but the new one looks quite brilliant. It's just a shame I can't even think about playing it until I can afford a system first. But I'm sure I'll get to play it sometime.

The Bard's Tale from 2005. Maybe the most klaanish game I've ever played to...

Bard's Tale is the shit! I LOVED that game, but didn't get to beat it... It wasn't the most vast or detailed game, but it was so simple and beautiful. Plus a game that actually incorporates Bards and using instruments as a means of kicking ass is just tops in my book.

Hei, Korpifellows... who remembers the old glory days of the 8-bit Nintendo (or, in the case of us Slavs, its identical bastard twin, Dendy)? The wonder and the magic of entering the first tv-based video game world, the haunting music and reckless addictiveness of its games? Contra, Gun Smoke, Prince of Persia, Kickmaster, Tetris... and everything else in between. Now that I've triggered your childhood nostalgia, make sure you're sitting down and have an extra pair of clean pants, because..... ..... Here, at this site, you can play those same Nintendo games. For free. I've been able to find all my favorites here, even the ones I didn't expect they would have: www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/retro/index.php?system=nesThey have Sega and Game Boy games on there too, but my heart belongs to old Nintendo. Passing along the news to those among us who are similarly inclined. See, I warned you to have an extra pair of pants... ;D

I still say that the old systems are the best: back when gaming was based around technicality and simplicity rather than making up for shitty story lines by having good graphics. Although I do enjoy some of the innovations they have come out with, my heart will always have something special for the old 8-bit systems. Gun Smoke and Contra are the best! Never played the original prince of persia but have always wanted to. I just realized a few weeks ago while searching youtube that they made a Lord of the Rings for either regular nintendo or super nintendo, and being the Tolkien-fanatic I am and wanting to buy anything, good or bad, relating to his works, I've wanted to find it or at least play it online but have not come across it yet. Looks really cool though! I will have to search the site more in-depth later, but was happy to see the games they have on it. Makes me happy knowing that I can jump online anytime I want to go back in time for some good ol' 8-bit gameplay! hehehe

I never heard about LOTR for Nintendo. Would not be surprised at it though, seeing as they made games even for Indiana Jones and Tom Sawyer ( ;D ) Contra!... The notoriously difficult game to get through. That is, before my friend borrowed from someone a hacked cartridge of it, where you get to be invincible for the entire game, in shining pants ;D This was also the time when I discovered that lasers are my #1 weapon of choice in this game. The longer the game goes on, the incredible it gets as the story unfolds. Thanks to that hacked cartridge (that also had Trogg and Robin Hood games on it), I was able to win the damn thing ;D Gun Smoke has one of the best soundtracks of all NES games. Haunted me incessantly for all these years ever since I left my 8-bit console behind when I was moving to the States. Prince of Persia is one of my two favorite NES games ever, the other one being Kickmaster. These two also have some of the best soundtracks of the platform, and just as haunting. I've never played Prince of Persia on other platforms, so this old Nintendo interpretation is the most iconic for me. Its world of mazes and labyrinths, in its purplish blue hues, frequently reoccurred in my dreams, it is so surreal. The spikes that stick out of the floor, the vertical iron jaws, the falling floor panels, and the main character's mirror double, perhaps the most surreal of all... fucking surreal and psychological. As for KickMaster, I believe it was partially responsible for my severe incurable case of Medievalitis fantasitis. There is something so harsh, dark, and haunting about this game and its world. And at the same time magical. Add to that the fact that I was an impressionable kid with rich imagination, this game really had engulfed me and swallowed me whole. And its music... still ringing in my ears after not hearing it for 14 years (damn, has it been that long already?..) and bringing back so many memories. These games at the top of a list that spans many hundreds of Nintendo 8-bit games, I know it's many hundreds because I kept a list of all the games I've played and all the games I've won. Still have that list. ...Back in the old days when you couldn't find any game-themed merch (we're talking early Russia here after USSR's collapse), so I made my own merch myself: made up my own stories and drew my own comic books of my favorite games' characters' adventures and shared them with friends (games covered included Contra, TMNT, Robocop, Prince of Persia, Jurrassic Park, with plenty of inspiration from old Schwarzenegger and Stallone flicks off of my friend's illegal underground cable channel). The KickMaster game was so loved that I even wrote my own game manual for it, level by level, with all the maps and villains and bosses and secret combinations and advanced kick moves and bonuses and passwords. And illustrated it too, in full color. And drew posters of it for my walls. And made a keychain of it. And wrote a screenplay for it, for a movie that I was envisioning in my head. And reenacted it with friends. And sat for many days with an English dictionary, racking my brain and trying to translate every single word in that game's prologue and epilogue, and triumphantly succeeding. If this isn't life, my friends, I don't know what is.

I'm not sure whether to thank you or not Hjalagh! I don't think I needed another reason to be on the computer! ;D But I can't resist the lure of Super Mario 3 and Contra. Contra was just freaking awesome and hard as hell! And that TMNT game! Damn I always got run over by that stupid tank or whatever it was in the streets! LOL! I think I would merrily trade in my hardly used Wii for an NES or SNES anyday! I would love to get my hands on a nice copy of Kid Icarus or Ninja Gaiden!

Spreading the game addiction until everyone is equally affected ;D *whistles innocently, kicks pebble* I've been thinking of getting me a NES and some old games and re-enter the childhood now and again, so to say. I already have the Kickmaster game cartridge, now all I need is the console to go with it And I don't think I will play this game online on that site, no matter how high the temptation, it just isn't the same and isn't as involving without the real tv in front of you and a real joystick gamepad in your hands. If you don't know this game, it comes highly recommended! You'd enjoy it a great deal. Even though I'm still somewhat bemused at the fact that the main character is a martial artist in the world of medieval dark fantasy, instead of more suitable pointy weaponry he could be wielding There's magic orbs and sorcery aplenty though.

Something tells me I shall be up to the wee morning hours knee deep in vintage gaming sites!

Aye, look it up, and what better time than the wee hours of the morning I'm sure there must be a psychological/neurological explanation, but something happens when late-evening fatigue kicks in, it somehow relaxes the mind and makes it more susceptible and absorb-able to great external stimuli such as books, movies, and of course adventure video games. On this viz site, you can even hook up a USB-based game controller and play with it instead of keyboard. I haven't yet done so, but the experience would be worth it I think. Back to the Kickmaster game - if you end up playing it on the internet, I'd still recommend also hunting down a cartridge of it on ebay and playing it on the console proper, it's much more absorbing than the net. Yep, the game's premise is anachronistic yet somehow it all holds together nicely. The main character you get to manipulate is satisfyingly medieval-looking, what with the cloak, rolled-down boots, and long straight hair. Don't look now, but I've even entertained the notion of naming my future son Thonolan. Of course, that was back when I was ten years old ;D Maybe I need to get arrested, but maybe I need more beer. Whoever's behind that game had a great imagination to say the least!

Eh, those consoles... Here nearly every guy of my age has an old NES or SNES. Those consoles and cartridges still can be bought, if you know the right place

It's actually for SNES, but looks amazing. Here is a video of the opening and first few minutes of gameplay: I love how they even have a few parts of Bilbo's toast before dissapearing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa14IvQW92UI never got to play Contra very much, all I remember was that it was indeed fun,a nd was also very impossible! That is what I Loved about old games, although I didn't get to play them much and didn't have many, is that they were difficult, and thus beating a game you felt like a Champion or some Video Game God. Now games are made so that anyone can beat them, and often times even on Hard they are still quite easy, or literally impossible, never that balance. Soundtracks of old games is perhaps one of my main reasons for loving old systems. Got to love the days when EVERY game had it's OWN ORIGINAL soundtrack, even if it was written often times by one guy using a keyboard and only a week of composing, it always came out amazing. My Brother, being the video game fanatic that he is, own almost every old system you can think of: Panasonic 3DO, Sega CD, Dreamcast, Genesis, NES and SNES... So I've been priviledged with finding new games that are quite amazing, or at least new soundtracks. The Sega CD, being that each game was on CD format, you could also put the CD into your stereo or computer and burn or listen to the game soundtrack of every game. My brother has Terminator for that system, and burned the soundtrack: it is absolutely amazing. I haven't looked yet, but I'm positive that one could find any video game soundtrack online through torrents or the like, considering that each system has a cult following, and each one of those people Love the music just as much, if not more sometimes, than the games. Hjalagh, if you are looking to buy the old systems back, if you can't find each system individually, they make a system called the FC-Twin, it is one console that is both a Nintendo and a Super Nintendo in one. I don't know if you can use original controlers, which takes away the mood, but I am nto completely sure on that. I think they have an FC-Triple or so too now, which contains a Sega Genesis as well. That kickmaster game sounds awesome! I didn't know it had a Medieval base to it. now I'm going to have to play it!!!! I should ask my brother if he knows about it, maybe I'll luck out and he'll have it already. If only!
