Other bands with female vocals or leaders: Lacuna Coil, Leaves`eyes, Epica, Within Temptation, After forever, Theatre of tragedy, Evanescense, The gathering, Tristania, Arch Enemy, Edenbridge, Darkwell, Xandria, Beseech etc. etc. Oh, and one I like a lot: the woman of Sirenia. You just have to open your eyes and ears, then you`ll discover MANY bands with cool women in front. You may as well add: Lumsk and asmegin

We forgot "Die Happy" (even if that`s not 100% Metal, but they constantly perform at Metal festivals as well).

Talking about women in Metal... I was at a Battlelore gig last weekend. Btw, seems the tour is not going so well (numbers of visitors). I hope it will become better in other countries. The singer of this band actually is beautiful... what a beatiful model for the photos she was... And the support band (Concept chaos) had 2 cool women in the band as well.

Shouldn't have seen this thread, now I think I'm in love with Battelore's singer... well, not in love, but she is really pretty... well, maybe pretty is not enough ;D About the other two, I'd better see more pics, but the second one seems more beautiful to me. Ok, ok, I should praise the vocal capacity or the scene personality of this three girls, but since I haven´t listened to them, nor know who they are... what you see while you have a drink in a bar is if the person is beautiful, not if he/she has got a doctorate on quatic physics Ok, I better go to sleep

There's one more cool woman for our "collection" here, she plays guitar in a German band called "Riger" (but no, Dave, this one's not your kind, as she's not so puppet-like as you like it )... she has the longest hair I ever saw on a woman on stage, when she's headbanging... woah, I have no words. I will only post a link here (as all photos are too large to post, when you wanna have her whole hair on the photo ;D ) : www.sheol-magazine.com/photos/RigerMun13.JPG

I don't know if this woman plays/played in other bands as well, I saw her for the first time 3 days ago as the new accordeon player in TURISAS ... I believe her name is Netta:

Heh. I am having a boring day and reading older threads, and stumbled upon this one. And though, as an old grumpy lady to throw my two cents in here, from when I used to be active in the scene back in Greece, around the 90s. (this is a graceful term to say that I am a "has been" ) I was involved in the scene for a good number of years - I keyboard sessioned for a couple of bands, and even formed my own for a bit (that's as far as metal goes, I had a standard position in a folk band and a garage band). (Here it's 2001 and I'm w'my folk band I miss them!) I have been refused position in a group for sessioning because I am a woman - the band leader preferred a guy with lesser skill than mine. (I have a diploma in Piano, been playing since 1979, I am not just another keyboard player). And I was told in my face that it was because I was a woman. Go figure. I also lack in appearances, though my various boyfriends and now my husband beg to differ which has always been a dual factor: Because I wasn't yet another pretty girl, I was treated as a musician and not as a piece of T&A., however, for the same reason, I was often invisible, unless I was actively being One Of The Guys. Especially after the show, where I'd have spitted fire off my fingers If I was still back home, I'd still be involved - and maybe I would have formed a band by now. Who knows?

It seems that in the US, women who rock out are more supported in the punk scene than in the metal scene, although few get signed on to any major labels but release stuff on independent labels like Kill Rock Stars, Ebullition, K Records, and Alternative Tentacles.
I have seen tons of punk and metal bands with women playing instruments and doing growly vocals but you would have to go to a show in someone's basement or a semi-legal warehouse space to hear them.
L7, 7 Year Bitch, Babes in Toyland, and Tribe 8 are all female hard rock that may be easier to find stuff by in Europe
You can check out Doomhawk's Black/Folk Metal with several female members on Myspace
And if anyone needs proof that women can totally rock just as hard as men, listen to Harum Scarum, an all female hardcore punk/thrash metal band from Portland also on myspace.
Also from Europe, I think folk-metal band Raud-Ants has 3 female members, and the female singer for Goat of Mendes does awesome growly vocals.
I think it sucks that women are expected to look like a supermodel and only sing the "pretty" vocals or the sweet melodic instruments to be in a band. I think any woman who can rock out and passionately play music is totally hot. Probably a lot of men find it threatening when a woman shows that she is powerful on her own and doesn't need to be a pretty decoration to male power.
As much as I enjoy metal, I am often disturbed by misogynistic images and lyrics, and find that the metal scene is just as homophobic as the rest of the culture, while a lot of hard-rocking women in the US are explicitly feminist in their lyrics and many are queer. I hope for more women to find their voice in the metal scene, and am waiting for an all-female folk metal band of Korpiklaani's caliber.
