Welcome I've played tin whistle for a few years (not that I'd be too good with it) so I guess I can share a few tips. First of all, just walk into your local instrument store as they are sold almost everywhere. Even the cheapest ones will do for a beginner, so you should get one for 5-10e. I'd suggest you get a D one, since tons of trad. irish songs are in that key. You can't get all pitches from a single whistle, so you might need to get different key ones for some songs but for a start one whistle will be just fine. You can find lots of tin whistle notes for traditional irish music online, for example here: martindardis.com/sheet_music_tin_whistle_notes_irish_songs.html . They simply show what holes you need to cover for each note. I also found this -> www.wikihow.com/Play-the-Tin-Whistle when googling, it should get you started pretty well

Hey thanks all!!! However, I want to buy a tin whistle (in key of D for start) on Ebay... But I would like to buy a Clarke (because Chrigel Glanzmann of Eluveitie advised me to buy a Clarke)...Is a good choice? And then, which model of Clarke is the best? Here is the page of the official Clarke's website with all the models of Clarke tin whistles: www.clarketinwhistle.com/products/Default.aspxI'm very undecided!!!

Finally, I have decided about which Tin Whistle I will buy: a Clarke in key of D, and precisely the model Meg...
Well, I hope that this thread will be useful for insert flute's tabs (for example of Korpiklaani's songs!).
P.S. : However, I know that Hittavainen plays the flute!!! All my compliments!!! :-)

Hi all!
I wanted to ask you something. I'm about to start playing low-whistle and tin-whistle, and I'd like to play some Korpiklaani songs, but there's a problem. The whistles are in different keys, and I don't know in which key my whistle should be so I can play Korpiklaani songs (like Pine Woods or Crows Bring The Spring).
In which key should I buy the whistle? Which is the most common key used in Korpiklaani's songs?
Thanks from Spain!

They use E and D tune... depends the song. Cheers. Do they use F? I have an old F whistle and I've been able to play Pine Woods, though the octaves weren't ok, sometimes I had to go high when it's low. I play Old Tale in the F whistle and it works fine, with the right octaves and all that stuff.

I moved all the posts from the other tin whistle discussion to here. One thread per subject makes the forum easier to follow

If you want to learn to play the tin whistle there are a couple of tips you can use.
1. don't buy an expensive whistle. 2. Start with the standard D tin whistle ( you can buy this on the internet very easy) 3. Try to use the Youtube video's. That's how i learned the basics. 4. Once you know the basics, try finding advanced lessons or try finding a teacher. A good thing to try out is to find irish folkgroups that have a tin whistle player and ask him.
5. If you really think you can play ok. try buying a more expensive whistle. But only if you are really sure you want to keep playing this. I bought a Chieftan after 3 years (those are 200 euro's) .. i now have a complete set here of chieftans

So hey, just found this Forum. Not much, as i see.. I got a lot of free-time the next couple of days, so i will tab some of the songs. Maybe make a blog-spot page or something with some tabs. I'm using a 'Waltons ´Scotish Tin whistle´' Key D, so that's what my tabs basicly will be in (i'm taking a trip to a music store one of the days. Maybe i will buy a key C whistle. EDIT: I was just Checking out some Live's and they use a ''Contralto flute''
