Here I am, a heretic, wavering between Gjallarhorn and Värttinä. I've already seen Gjallarhorn but their set was too short, and seeing Värttinä live would be a dream come true. Thanks Humppaporo for announcing of the chance to vote! But no 'Klaani this time.. ;D

You have not seen Värttinä live? For me it is, with Korpiklaani, the best live band i know. I have seen them 3 times now, but whenever they come within a few hours driving, i will go there. You definitely should see them, they make a huge contact to the audience and have an excellent and vivid performance. On my website there are some pics, that can give you an impression. But as for Korpiklaani, i think it would be great if they perform on a folk festival also, preferably Kaustinen folk festival.

I gave my vote to Korpiklaani. 'Klaani, Värttinä and Gjallarhorn are the only bands in that festival, which should be given some votes - namely what comes to that list given in the website. IMO one of the worst problems in big Finnish folk festivals is the fact that there's always some pop artists, which do not play any folk or any ethnic stuff at all; it brings only the question: what the heck do they do in there? If the reason is that they sell more than any true ethnic band, then it brings the other question: why in the heck the whole festival is then called "folk" festival? Eh! That's one of the reasons I've boycotted big folk festivals here in Finland and been only in minor ones. IMO Ekotrippi, Timo Rautiainen, Kari Tapio, Jarkko Martikainen or Scandinavian Music Group do NOT[/u] belong in folk festivals.

Well, after looking at the lists of previous performers at HFF I think the emphasis is not solely on ethnic music (in the sense of something exotic like Tuvan throat singers or the like) but they have also had country music or more common folk rock/pop acts performing at the festival, and some of the previous bands sound definitely interesting. So the criteria seem to be that the performers have more or less to do with traditional Finnish folk music the way for example Värttinä does or then that the bands have been inspired by folk music or world music of other parts of the world, like Gjallarhorn. I see why the rest of the bands are there, for example the music of Kari Tapio has been called 'modern folk songs', but still I can't fit Timo Rautiainen to these categories and I basically can't even understand why anyone would like his music, well, beside the fact that Tuomas Holopainen has played synth on his albums. In my opinion the biggest problem about the most of these Finnish folk music festivals is the location: the festivals are always located in the middle of nowhere, which is a reason for us city people with no cars to not to get our arses there Humppaporo:Nooo I haven't seen Värttinä yet and I definitely feel that I have been missing out a lot... But I'm afraid if I went to their concert I would be bothering everyone else by singing and dancing all the time, haha! But I hope I could see them live soon! And personally I'd kill to see Hedningarna live with Wimme Saari, but I think it would be too good to be true, ever.

@katariina: you would not be bothering anyone, because that is exactly what Värttinä wants you to do! We also danced and sang along, they ask and ask everyone to do so, and are happy if some folks have the guts to do it You will enjoy even better than you already think!! Hedningarna.. one of my dreams too. Maybe best band ever, at least as they were. Waiting for a new album for ages... or is there any? (sorry for off-topic)
