I've decided to change the name of the original thread to "European folklore" to make it more interesting for everyone.
So, here you can write about the traditional music and games in your countries.
Now, I would like to get you more familiar with the great wealth of the Serbian traditional music we have managed to preserve in today's world of globalization and loss of national identity. I'm sure you're gonna enjoy .
Throughout the centuries, songs have traveled from soul to soul, from heart to heart orally, changing slowly through every new singer or narrator, gaining its pure and generously simple form that characterizes the emotional position of one people's soul. This kind of folk song is common throughout the world, but the special and unique type of songs emerges from the souls of the people living in Balkan countries. Slavic spirit is felt in songs from many different places and thanks to irreproachable and remote position of many villages, many songs remained intact.
Some experts argue that some songs derive from the time even before the Serbs and Southern Slavs accepted Christianity. Songs are often about ancient pagan rituals and customs which, in some forms, have been preserved to this day.
Many cultural armies that marched under this sky left their marks, but strong emotional strength in the song's lyrics gave that basic characteristic, the one which confirms the Balkan soul which sings straight from the heart.
Frequent themes are slavery, heroism, forbidden love, the cries of mothers, sisters or the maidens for their son, brother or lover who is imprisoned or died in battle. Other themes include harvest, singing, dancing, customs... There is a great variety of songs and every place has its own melodies, rhythms and themes. The Christianity also inspired the folk to sing about Christmas, Easter or Lazarus...
Simple and pure song is accompanied by an instrument as well. Players used to make their own instruments and tune them according to their feeling. In time, they became real masters of their craft. The most popular instruments include the flute, gusle (more on gusle can be found on the 2nd page of the "Instruments" thread), bag-pipe, many kinds of percusions and drums, etc..
Today the most of the songs remained preserved, and with the rise of national awareness, which was slightly blurred during some periods of misrule, they continue to pass from a generation to generation.
In videos below you can see and hear the beauty of the Serbian folklore. I believe it will be inspiring for many of you, especially musicians. Enjoy!

This one is my favorite. In it a girl mourns over the death of her lover in the epic battle at Kosovo that took place on June 28th 1389. She addresses a hill and the field Kosovo asking where he is.. It brings tears to my eyes every single time.
