I've always been interested in names and i would like to hear about yours! Do you have any middle names? do you know the orgin of your name? Why did your parents gave you that name? In which countries it is popular? Do you like your own name? What are your own name preferences? Moderators, feel free to delete this topic if you find it unnecessary! My name is very hard to guess My middle name is Julia (pronounced like Yulia in english) so my whole name is Ina Julia. The orgin of my first name is english/german (i don't know which of them is correct). My name is simple born being a short form of all names ending with letters i-n-a like Kristina. Other source says that it comes from Agnes which means lamb-like, pure. My name isn'Lt so popular in my country, Finland but the finnish form Iina is quite popular nowdays. My name is in the swedish calender and i celebrate my name day in Finland on 29th August; in the year of 1980 my mother was at hairdresser and she showed her a calender of swedish-speaking citizens and my mother got excited about my name So after 8 years of that evant i was born and there's was no doubts about my first name. But there was a problem with middlename; I was going to be Ina Elvira but my father didn't like Elvira. The other alternatives were; Julia, Sofia, Ottelia and Aleksa. I think i was named Julia because both of my parent's names start with J: Jaana (Yana) and Jukka (Yukkah) which both are common finnish names. I like my own name very much because it's so short and easy to write. Also, it sounds beautiful. I've given myself the freedom to pronounce it in two different ways; with a short i and with a long i. about my name preferences....they change very often and right now i have no spesific names i would prefer.

My name is Monika and my middle name is Daniela The origin of the name Monika is not clear, it could come from latin " moneo" (advisor), from greek " Monachos" (monk; often interpreted as "the unique") or from punic origin (would meen "the Goddess" then...). This name was also the name of Saint Monica of Hippo. There are many ways to shorten this name, but i prefer Moni. Other forms of this name are: Monica, Monique, Möneli, Momo, Monelle, Mone, Moune, Möne,Mona, Monä and Monneka. [compied from de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monika]Now, Daniela is the female form of the name Daniel and this is hebrew for " god is my judge". I don't use this name at all, it's only on the paper and on my ID card. i don't even sign with it. I like my first name best, because it sounds nice and nobody knows exactly where it comes from and what it means, so it's some kind of mystic and i like mystic things but many of the interpretations i found fit also on my character (eg. "advisor") and so i think my parents chose very well . I was to be named Grete or some kind of other ancient german name because my great-grandmother wanted this...fortunately my parents have their own heads and decided to give me a common and international name which is known everywhere. And i'm happy with it =) There is also an interesting story about my last name Prause my grandfather told me: it comes from the german word Preuße (engl. prussian|pronounced "proisse" with sharp s and short e). The people some day called the prussians Prause and so this last name was formed like many other family names (eg. Müller -> miller, Schulze -> mayor, etc.)

Great topic, Ina Julia! This should be some fun. My first name is Sarah, a Hebrew name from Biblical times. It means Princess (yes, I admit it, it's true). My mother's name is Merilyn, a made-up name that is difficult to pronounce and spell, and she has found it a problem in her life. So when she came to naming her own children, she gave us all very basic and easy, common names. Louise is my middle name. Louise means Warrior Woman (battle metal is in my blood! ) and I'm not sure of the origin, but assume it could be Welsh - certainly something from Britain. Unfortunately for me, Sarah and Louise were the two most popular girl's names in the year I was born, so I am very common indeed. As an example, my best friend's name at school was Louise Sarah. ;D And here is the worst part - when my sister was born, guess what my parents called her? Yes, that's right - Louise. They used it again!! Two girls and they already started recycling names!!! I find this really really bizarre, it's something I have never been able to get a proper explanation for. I'm interested to see what other people write...

Wow Great subject. I don't know alot about the meaning of my names. But I'll share what I do know. My full name is Oliver Andrew Sargent. No one calls my Oliver unless it is when an employer talks to me or I am in trouble. Every body calls me Olli(not Olly or Ollie) Although this woman at works who flirts with me calls me Olls or Ollikins. My Mum named me Oliver after her Ex-boyfriend before she Married my dad. It also comes from a Greek Olive tree and after a famous actor called Oliver Reed. My second name is Andrew as that is my dads name and Andrew means strong and couragous. I am not too sure about The meaning of Sargent. As I have been told by Jonne and Markus Toivonen (ensiferum) I have a very Finnish name which I am quite happy about. If it was not for my Nan then I would have been called James. James Sargent? Hmm @mary: As my girlfriend is called sarah and it means Princess, this is very very true with the way she is treated I will not go into much detail just in case she reads this

Hmmm, interesting thread I've got some problems with names... everybody calls me in one way or another... and sometimes they even call me to dinner But no, well, stupid joke, I know. My name is David which is Hebrew too (yeah, I'm a Jew it seems...) and this means "beloved" and "friend"... I supposse that I better keep on the "friend" meaning, because beloved.... I'm not much beloved, only in a friendly way. I was going to be called Oscar, but one cousin came before, and I was suppossed to be a girl (that's why I've got long hair and hearings, I supposse) not a boy, and I suppossed I had been called Sara (another one), then, after my mother. New my sister is called Sara, and my brother Miguel Ángel, after my father. And you'll be surprised but Spanish usually don't have two names, we've got two surnames, which in my case are Batres Márquez (from father and mother's first surnames). What is really striking (though not much in Pinto) is the fact that this seems to be an English surname/word, according to one genealogychal sheet I've got. One teacher at uny told in class one day that the upper sides of medieval towers were called batresses or butresses; and in psain there are a lot of foreign names that were "accomodated" to Spanish, as Guzmán, which really was "Goodman". Well, the things is that I learnt some months ago that the first guy who came to Pinto with my surname went from Ciempozuelos in XVIIth C, a village 13 kms southwards from Pinto. So I don't know where the family of that guy came from, but my last theory is that since England broke with Catolicism on XVth C, my ancestors could have been Catholics that emigrated to Spain instead of changing into protestants. About my mother's surname it has nothing spectacular; suffix -ez in Spanish meant "son of", so Márquez means son of Marco, and I supposse this comes form Latin. And about the way I'm called, some of my friends call me Goldman; when I played basketball I once scored a triple shoot from middle line... that's the official version, the truth is that my ego liked the word so I told my friends to call me that (I was 14, but I'm called this way now). I also was called Buitre (Vulpture) but it was because people said I resembled footbal player Emilio Butragueño, who was nick-named Buitre. Other friends, you all among them, just call me Dave, after Dave Murray from Iron Maiden. A friend at secoundary schoold called me Devi, and I liked that; I also like a lot the English form Davy that somebody here began calling me one day.

I only have one name: Janneke. It's a typical Dutch name, with no interesting background. I wished I had an interesting name, like all of you. I only know that my name is a combination from the names of my grandma and my mother. My grandmother was called: Anneke, and my mother is called: Marjan. Take "Jan" out of Marjan and "nneke" out of Anneke.... and voilà

My first name Juha is the most common male name in the whole Orb. It's the same name as John, Jaan, Ivan, Juan, Johannes, Yuhanna, Yahua, Johanan, Yannis, Gjon, Xuan, Jan, Hone, Seán, Eóin, Ián, Jánis, Iancu, Giovanni, João.. etc. It's from John the Baptist. The name itself comes from Hebrew Yəhôḥānān, which means "Yahweh is merciful".
My second name, Valtteri is of German origin. It comes from Walther, which originally means "War chief" or "Leader".
My mother chose the name Maria for my big sister, because one of her good childhood friend was Maria. And because Maria is the most common female name, it was logical to name me Juha then. My father suggestion for the name was Jesse James - I'm everly grateful that this suggestion never went through. The second name Valtteri was picked up from the name list just with guessing to save more time.
I once hated my first name as it's so common name. I wanted to have some more original and more Finnish name instead of Biblical and so common name. But I don't mind for that anymore. I at least have the last name, which is very rare: Jyrkäs. It may come from Finnish word jyrkkä which means "high".

Sweet, i'm interested in this too. my full name is Nuno Helder Monteiro Cruz Nuno comes from latin, but its latin equivalent is not known, so means "father, grandfather, fish". i read sometime ago thats its also "the one who takes care of children", a nanny... Helder comes from up here (holland, germany), so in holland means clear among 1 or 2 other meanings i think. ok, the name means brightful, clean and sober man that always conquest the trust of people to who he involves. their never get tired of praising his courage, smartness and caracter. Monteiro - he who hunts in the mountains. also somthing like "forest guard" Cruz - means cross and comes from latin, as probably everyone knows

very interesting....
my first name is karolina, it's the polish version of original 'carolin', an old germanic name with means 'freewoman' and so my name says all i want to achieve and i really like it! my parents chose the name after watching a movie, in which a macho called 'karol', the male version of 'karolina', seduces many young women
my second is anna, it's from the hebrew name 'hannah' and means 'charm' and 'agreeableness', which do not apply to me, but it also means 'sheltered by God' *rejoicing* but i don't like it so much, because it's a palindrome and i don't like the symmetry in palindromes
and my third name is alexander and yes! it's male after the great macedonic hero and king alexander the great, who should be a beauty... but i'm not so... but i like to have also a male name ^^

My name, Violeta, ( violet in english) is a flower's name. My mother chooses this name because her best friend, who died when she was thirteen, was called Violeta too. I don't know anything about the origin of my name, really. When I was a child, I hated my name, I thought it was very strange, but now I like it. ;D Some of my friends call me Lain, like the name of a girl from an Anime film. They call me Euronymousa too, because I like black metal, and sometimes they call me "that stupid girl with a violin" A question: I would like to know my name in another languages, specially finnish. If someone can help me...

My name is Silvio Antônio Passos Cavalcanti Caetano da Silva (Quite big, no? ) I was on a work trip in Brazil few years back and I had to hand out diplomas for completing a course - the problem was paper never was large enough to fit people's names in it ;D As for my own name, it's one version of Maria and Mary, not very common, but not beautiful and I hate it
