Oh my xD. Well, reaction my mom made to me first listening to Korpiklaani in the presence of her, was just like to any other metal band I hear: "Oh god, they're screaming! Won't your head hurt after listening to this?" Au contraire, actually.
But my friends. That's a whole other story xD. Friend #1: "Hm, not my cup of tea.. too heavy." Friend #2: "Ah, okay." (this awkward kind of okay) Friend #3: "um, they sing in Finnish." Me: "Yeah!! Isn't that Absolutely wonderf-" Friend #3: "Why do you like it, I don't get it." Me: "Firstly, I love the sound and the message. Secondly, searching for creatures in the forest, accompanied by their voices is really My Thing. Third..I really kind of their looks too." Friend #3: "But they're like trolls.." Me: "Oh yes!" Friends #1,2,3: "I don't understand you."
So, I am kind of left alone on this one xD.

I haven't shown Korpiklaani to my parents, because as much as they like folk music, they're allergic to heavy metal guitars...so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't like it. I did lend one of my KK albums (Spirit of the Forest, I think it was) to a friend, however...a french canadian man in his late forties. He loved it and listened to it nonstop for weeks. So I lent him my copies of "Idja" and "Shamaniac"...and he loved them even more. Since then, whenever I see him, he's always telling me how much he loves the bands "Sherman" and "Korpipanly" (his english is a little rough, but I forgive him...he's a true fan now!!)
And then there was another friend of mine, a man in his early fifties, who likes most heavy metal music anyway. I gave him my MP3 player one day just as "Happy Little Boozer" came on...his brow knit with puzzlement when he heard the intro, and he said "...Accordians?"...then his head began to bob uncontrollably when the rest of the song came in. He returned the MP3 player to me after the song had finished, saying that he'd definitely party to it, but not necessarily listen to it in his car...

My mother has always liked music I've liked. I don't know whether she likes Korpiklaani, but at least she's able to recognize Korpiklaani song when it's playing. And she was really interested in Metsämies video and she claimed, that it would be nice to dance polka to this song XD But my father - no way. He loves country music and hates all kinds of metal... And my friends are mostly into Nightwish and these kinds of music. They don't like folk metal

A little off topic but, almost all of my friends now love Korpiklaani. I even got a few people into them that hate Metal. I just need to work on that one friend of mine that don't like them...

I had Korpiklaani playing on my laptop last I visited family when I went back home. I live halfway across the country, so this happens very seldom: Family Member: Oh, you still listen to that metal stuff? Me: Yes. [goes back to working on some crap for work] Family Member: Still haven't outgrown it? Me: Whee, an accordion! Family member: [shakes head, leaves room]
I guess it was different enough that nothing could be found to criticize.
I did get one of my friends into this sort of music, though! It doesn't sound like everything else out there and it just feels good to listen to.

Ahah, nice thread ;] The other day I showed my dad some clips from YouTube and he just said: "Oh, wow, this guy (Jonne) looks just like you when you had longer hair!" ... I was like 0_o But he otherwise likes the music, given the fact that my whole family thinks there's something wrong with me liking songs in Finnish. As for my mom, she thinks Korpiklaani's music is really joyful and funny. I even played her some Shaman songs yesterday and her reply after the 5th song was: "Well, I think it's fine .. I haven't gone mad yet from listening to "la-la-la-la- eii- oo- la -ho-la" and you, singing along, for the last 15 minutes, so it's ok ..." (Me: "Mom, you just can't feel the beuty of these verses ...") But they usually accept quite well the folk metal bands I listen to. My dad even tries inserting random historical facts when I play him my fav. bands, so his acquaitances with the music I like turn out to be quite productive

My parents actually like korpiklaani, especially the more slower and calmer songs. On 29th Nocember i went to sleep at my aunt's hause to be able to see Korpi's gig in Vosselaar (which was absolutely great, i'll post about it soon) and the day after she asked me: 'I still don't understand how folk can be linked with metal?!' .

Also many classical composers based their compositions on folk melodies or gave their music a folky touch... it sounds just as impossible... or as possible

My dad likes Korpiklaani. He thinks they're strange and fun. Mum doesn't give anything I listen to the time of day though.

Introducing 'Klaani to my parents? Well, that went awkward...
Mom listens to them when driving to work now and dad can't stand them. Too fast for him... 60's rock fan...

Introduced Korpiklaani to my dad over Xmas. Showed him the Wooden Pints video. Loved the music and the background so much he is now looking up a cheap way to get a holiday in Finland. But he is a massive folk and hard rock fan so it is not surprising! Yep dad, go on looking, and book me in too while you are at it. My mum... weeell, as with most metal, she normally does not see beyond the "file under" label. (Metal= Scary, loud music probably made by people on drugs) She is still trying to digest me and my fiancé's love for Viking Death Metal. On the other hand, my fiancé is a fan of the most extreme metal out there, but he is also as hard-working, honest and kind person as you can get, so she is learning to see beyond the labels!

One day I was like "So mom, if Korpiklaani decides to perform somewhere close enough to where we live, can I go to the gig?" and she said "Oh yeah, then we're definetly going!"

Both my parents like Korpiklaani, they would not go to see a live, but they come to my room every time I listen to it xD They say "it sounds interesting" and "i like the violin here" (last one, my father, who is violin teacher xD)
