My parents aren't too surprised to hear anything I listen to. My eldest brother was a metalhead early on, and listened to some pretty extreme metal which I also got into. My middle brother wasn't as much of a metalhead, but metal of all forms has always been known to my family. So my parents really never disliked, or at least openly, anything they've heard. Although 99% of the music I play, they call "Forest music" or something to that extent. They are right.

So my grandfather, who is an old conservative lawyer asked me what music I liked. I was pretty intimidated, since most of my library is 'devil music' or whatever, but he likes Sibelius from Finland, so I gave him Korpiklaani from Finland. He actually liked it, especially the yoiking passages.

I notice that Korpiklaani is a very parent-friendly band. My mom likes them and wants to learn the fiddle solo in wooden pints! And my boyfriend's mom has been to their concert Well kind of, she broke her foot before the concert even began, and listened outside! D:

This is a very interesting thread, especially given the range of ages and experiences represented!! It is great to know there are people my age not afraid to embrace new sounds, and that they all have children with such excellent, discerning musical tastes!! I add my thoughts because I find myself on both sids of this subject. I am well old enough to be a mom although I am not one. However, over the years, my friends' children have all, at one time or another, walked into my home to find me listening to the Ramones, the Dropkick Murphys, Disturbed, Rammstein, Flogging Molly, Static X, Rob Zombie, or the Buzzcocks at considerable volume while washing my dishes. We all survived the awkwardness of having cross-generational music interests, and they are no longer surprised by anything I listen to, which has led over the years to good discussions about music, most often about their musical tastes some of which we share and some of which neither of us understands. But it is always a nice conversation I am honored to be a part of. My own mother developed in me love and respect for music and words, including how to appreciate fine melody, harmony and well-turned verse, no matter their origin--so it would be hypocritical of her to dismiss out-of-hand what I listen to then or now. Groups like TYR and Korpiklaani do not faze her in the least, and she finds the music very interesting in tune, language and construction--as long as I play it for her at a lower volume than I prefer. But she's always done that, even when I first was playing the Doors and Black Sabbath. Lastly, I purposefully bring "mix" CDs that consist solely of non-English-lyrics songs from groups like TYR, Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Hedningarna, and Ensiferum to play in my office at work while doing paperwork. The clients often stop by my door to listen; they enjoy and seem to "get" the spirit of the songs despite having no frame of reference for the lyrics. Also, finding common ground with music is a very nice safe doorway through which clients can introduce other subjects they want to discuss, which is always important. And my coworkers definitely prefer Korpiklaani to the Sex Pistols.

My dad got introduced to Korpiklaani when I was normally sitting on the computer listening to this band and just asked what I was listening to. I told him the band's name and he got interested about it. A couple of days passed and then he once upon a sudden said to me: "Hey, the band called Korpiklaani you were listening to is actually great!" I just stared at him for a little while and just smiled after it So we both like Korpiklaani very much now and we've been at their concert together. After all he doesn't love them just as much as I do, but he likes them a lot still. My mom is aware of this band too and she just says they're OK (but she absolutely loved Rauta when my dad played it to her She still sometimes asks me or my dad to play the "Iske, iske, iske"-song to her xD) So, since I haven't got any siblings, there aren't anyone who doesn't like Korpiklaani in our family
