I’m going to write about some Viking films for robhalford and all of you, who like them.
“The Vikings” (1958) Tony Curtis (Eric), Kirk Douglas (Einar), Ernest Borgnin (Ragnar) Janet Leigh (Morgana) It's one very good old film from the time, when there weren't many visual effects, but the actors play is splendid. It is the story of two half-brothers, sons of the viking chieftain Ragnar, who don't know each other and are enemies. They are rivals for Princess Morgana, who has been captured during a raid in England as travelling to marry Aella, the king of Northumbria. The idea about the death of Ragnar in the wolf's pit is taken from the sagas about Ragnar Lodbrok, a semi-legendary king of Sweden and Denmark from the middle of the 9th century(probably) .Captured by king Aella of Northumbria, he was thrown in a pit filled with poisonous snakes. In the film Aella is thrown also in the wolf's pit by Eric, but the historical truth is that Aella was killed by the sons of Ragnar in a very cruel way, called "The Blood Eagle" (I'm not gonna describe it 'cause there are forum members below 18 or even below 16).
“The 13th Warrior”(1999) Antonio Banderas (Ahmed Ibn Fadlan), Vladimir Kulich (Buliwyf), Dennis Storhoi (Herger the Joyous) The film is very popular, so I'm not gonna write the plot. It's made after the Michael Crichton's book with the original tittle "Eaters Of The Dead". The film and the book differ. Though the film is good, I recommend the book.
"The Viking Sagas" (1995) Ralf Moeller (Kjartan), Ingibjoerg Stefansdottir (Gudrun), Sven-Ole Thorsen (Gunnar), Hinrik Olafson (Ketil) The family of Kjartan is killed by Ketil and his men. Kjartan is looking for revenge. Gunnar is an old friend of his father, helpping Kjartan, but they are rivals for the hand of Gudrun. Ketil kidnaps Gudrun, but she's carring the Kjartan's child. At the end ...the story is told by this child as an old man. The film is considered to be faitfhul to the actual Icelandic sagas.
"Beowulf and Grendel"(2005) Gerard Butler (Beowulf), Ingvar Eggert Sigurdsson (Grendel) The film is an adaptation of the Anglo-Saxon medieval poem "Beowulf", about the battle between Beowulf, Lord of the Danes and the frightful troll Grendel. The fiim is a natural and a raw story, than a myth and a worth seen one.
PS: When I studied "Beowulf" in school it was really disappointing in this ancient English, but the film changed my opinion.

Guest House Paradiso... Very weird film about a hotel even worse than "Fawlty Towers". ANd that means a lot...
Example: the cook left, and the only food then could offer the guest was radioactive fish (they didn't know that then...)

Yesterday I watched Thumbsucker. It's an American film but its more "independent" than "Hollywood".
The main character is a teenage boy who still sucks his thumb and the story takes us through his journey as he struggles to break his habit, and the lives of those around him.
I enjoyed watching the relationships and I think that's the strength of this film - how the mother and father relate to the boy in their different ways, how they relate to each other, etc.
I especially recommend it if you're a Vincent D'Onofrio fan like me! ;D

I had a good day at the cinema yesterday. I went to watch a Spanish film called "El Laberinto Del Fauno" (The Faun's Labyrinth) directed by Guillermo del Toro. It's a film about a girl who travels to the north of Spain in the year 1944; her mother has married to a Captain of the Fascist Army (a real evil man); this girl finds a faun who claims her to be the lost princess of the earth of the fauns and she will have to pass three proofs to be back; there's a mixture of reality and fantasy, with the fight of "Los Maquis" and the goverment that hold power after the Civil War as the frame. It is a very good film, part of the trilogy that Del Toro begun with "El Espinazo del Diablo" about the civil war; both films were gloomy and quite gothic; this last was far better than the first, even though I liked the first when I watched it. The role played by Sergi López (the fascist captain) was a very good one, excellent. There's a great dialogue between Sergi López and Alex Angulo, who plays the role of a doctor in which Alex argues that he didn't obeyed the orders of the Captain ..."because obeying orders, just without a reason is something done just by people like you"... in the film it's a great sentence. It's a pity that this film won't go outside Spain; here it's getting a relative good audience, and excellent critics but as usual people here preffers to give the massive money to films like Snakes in the Plane and shit like that.
After we watched that one, my friend Nico and me slipped in another Spanish film, called GAL. Just for you to know, GAL was a contraterrorist group that acted against ETA in the first years of the first socialist goverment. That created a big scandal, conveniently fed by the opossition. I won't judge if it's moral or not to use violence against the violents, but I will judge the film; first, it's a film payed by the editorial group of the guy who was the director of the newspaper in which the scandal saw the light, so it's quite partial... in fact the editor appears like an example of integrity when he's nothing but a neo-con whi has been implicated in sexual affairs and things like that. The film portrays the ministers and former President Felipe González as stupid people who doesn't know how to dress; and the policemen who were in charge of the dirty play against ETA as rednecks... which is something that was true. THe problem of the film is that it is a covert and subliminal propaganda of the fixation of Predro J. Ramirez -the director of the newspaper-, a guy who still claims that the attacks of 11-M was perpetrated by ETA with the help of the Socialist Party... simply rubbish and a stupid way to throw away a perfect evening that begun with the great "The Faun's Labyrinth"

Guest House Paradiso... Very weird film about a hotel even worse than "Fawlty Towers". ANd that means a lot... Example: the cook left, and the only food then could offer the guest was radioactive fish (they didn't know that then...) That is still one of the funniest films I have ever seen! With the giant green ball of radioactive fish stuff chasing them, and the kitchen fight scene. Also, strange fact, when he says the line "Excuse me one moment," just before having the hooks put up his nose, he learnt how to say the line backwards. Stupid knowledge I seem to amass Also, any and all Monty Python films, I can't help but rewatch this time and time again. Corpse Bride, I couldn't help but cry like a baby at the end, its so And of course, a good bit of horror from The Amityville Horror(Gave my older sister nightmares ), The Grudge and Saw

I just watched Silent Hill the other day. I haven't played the game it's based upon almost at all, but since I could recall some scenes at the beginning trough their camera angles I suppose it's pretty loyal to it's origin ;D The movie wasn't scary at all on my ranks, but it's like no other what comes to disgust and physical side of horror. I'm happy that they made the movie the way it is, since majority of game-based movies tend to be this oh-so-cool 21st century action movies with terrible plots and acting (Resident Evil, anyone?). There were few scenes that are quite unclear or even corny (yes, I would notice a piece of plastic in random corpse's mouth and take it as a clue as well), but I guess they make sense for those who have finished the game. The plot with it's several layers is really great and complicated nevertheless, so you really won't guess what's happening in the end even when you've watched 90% of the movie. The visual side of the movie is just plainly perfect. The ash-covered, abandoned 60's style city (reasons for this are explained in the movie) looks really beautiful and is 100% loyal to the game. The deformed monsters are as well just like in the game. There's also plenty of gore but it certainly isn't the main interest of the movie. More likely it's pretty realistic if compared to the usual amount of blood and guts seen on movies. Some of the stuff on screen makes Cannibal Holocaust to look like saturday morning's muppet show, so if you can't watch blood or rotting flesh this certainly isn't a movie for you. For otherwise I highly recommend it Trailer. P.s. the final "fight" must be the coolest ever in movie history!

I still havent gotten round to seeing that film! I keep meaning to, but then I think, meh, I'll watch it eventually
The only film I can think of, again, out of the genre, but keeping in with the zombiefication theme, would have to be Shaun Of The Dead. Extremely funny, with little musical references and references to things said earlier in the film popping up everywhere. Look out for the reference to their plan, and then look at the film as a whole. Some of the funniest moments I have seen were watching this. It's also a sort of comedy homage to Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead etc, and carries the rom-zom-com genre well.

BORAT! Oh sweet Lord Jesus! When I saw that movie...I don't think I've ever laughed that hard in my entire life...Some scenes were completely outrageous and unexpected, but other than that, it was absolutely hilarious. I went with a couple of my friends, and of course, us being the only metal kids who actually have a life and go out other than going to shows, we went. The theatre was PACKED to the back with people, so we had to sit 3 fucking rows away from the front. I'm the type of person who hangs out with the more men than women and is known to be "one of the guys" and of course they're obnoxious. So we're sitting in the movie theatre and everything's quiet as the movies about to start, whilst Josh obviously having to do something stupid...Everything's silent and all you hear from him is this massive death growl...oh my God...I swear...it echoed to the back of the theatre, everyone's fucking staring at us as we're distrupting them pissing ourselves laughing. He continuously did that throughout the movie, too. It was horrible, haha. We're lucky we didn't get kicked out, too, since we were laughing so hard, too...But yeah, anyone with a strong stomach should go see it...

Hmm, the last films i watched were Battle Royale and Battle Royale II:Requiem.
If you have never seen BR, I suggest you go and watch it/rent it and watch it. It's basically done in Japan, and all the children are revolting, so there is a law passed, the BR Law. Every 3 years, a class from a school is sent up to an island, and they have 72 hours to kill each other, with the last one standing the winner. The twist is, they have necklaces on, that mark their presence, if they go in a danger zone, or there is more than one left, they go boom. The storyline is quite in depth, and focuses mainly on a few characters, yet its easy to pick up on the stories of other chracters as you meet them. Within the first half hour of this film four people had died, thats how bad it is.
BR II, is a different matter. 2 of the players from BR somehow manage to escape, and set up a terrorist organisation, declaring war on the adults. So a new BR law is passed, BR II. THis time, the class chosen, have to go to war against this terrorist organisation, they have the neclklaces, there are danger zones still, but this time, the necklaces are linked to pairs. If one of your pair dies, or is over 50 m away from you, you die. This film has a lot more in depth storyline, and for quite a violent film, it actually has quite a sad ending. There is also a link between a character of the first film and one of the second, I wont ruin it by telling you who it is

Thanks for telling us about BRII! I watched BR for the first time only a few months ago and enjoyed the concept quite a lot - those crazy Japanese! I'll have to hunt down BRII now.
