Interesting subject, but at least for me most of the persons mentioned above are quite unknown, thus it would be nice to hear even a bit more descriptions, facts and/or opinions about them instead of sheer listing. This would be btw. quite desirable also what it comes to ie. the threads about the artist recommendations and the now playing song(s). No offence now, just a thought in general.

I don't understand much about painting and arts in general, but still have got some painters which I like. The guy I like most is Hercher, just because I like those perspectives he creates... I remember the first drawing I saw of this guy, its tittle was something about stairs, and I got astonished.
Another paionter I like very much is Turner, the English romantic. His drawings are so powerful! The Tempest for example, you can fell the waves and the wind on your face.
The dark age of Goya is also amazing, paintings as "El akelarre" or "El gran cabron" are so obscure, so (let me call them this way) gothic!!!
And of course Velazquez... he's just a genious; the portrait of his servant is great... and he was just portraying a servant! When he portrayed the Pope, he showed he could paint whatever he wanted and make it look as real as could be.

Agree, Salvador Dali was/is great! Also Karel Willink, Dutch surrealistic painter René Magritte, French surrealist Good old Rembrandt, because of his use of light! Jan te Wierik, used very vivid colours, had a strong expression, and was also a very good friend. I also love primitive art, like Henri Rousseau and many primitive folkloristic Russian painters. Also very fond of some of the drawings of A.Tolonen ( atolonen.cjb.net/) and the drawings of Samuli Ponsimaa (aka Skrymer of Finntroll) are great! elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/s/a/samu/samu.htmlKay Nielssen, great illustrator, Art nouveau style. Besides that I love great photographers, one of the best person photographers is imo is Veli-Veikko Elomaa. One of the best landscape photographers is Martin Kers. But all art is debatable:

I totally agree ! And I adore the works of Travis Smith, he designs covers for bands like Opeth, Katatonia and Deadsoul Tribe, his site is www.seempieces.com (well maybe he is more than just a painter but I love his artwork)

Akseli Gallen-Kallela - A national Finnish painter, who is known by his brilliant Kalevala - based works. Along those he made much of ethnographic works in Karelia and Finland, and later in Africa and America too.
Kristjan Raud - an Estonian painter, who made very strong and archaic paintings based in Kalevipoeg
H.R.Giger - propably most known as a creator of Alien - character. At least this man has quite a huge and very very absurd imagination!
I also like Russian painters very much, and absurd, and surrealistic sculptures as well.

Salvador Dali- Who doesn't know this guy, great surrealistic artist with an interesting intellectual mind I didn't like him when I was a child, found some of his painting scary, and I've been burden with that opinion up till now. Anyway, I must admit that the Jesuschrist on the cross he painted was an amazing drawing

Frida Kahlo -she's my favourite! as Diego said -"I pait the outside, you [Frida] from the inside". I like the strong colours and her themes. Akseli Gallén-Kallela - His Kalevala paintings are my favourite part of the ateneum art museum. Very real. very "folk". Hugo Simberg - I don't know much about his work but "the wounded angel" is my favourite painting. I have it as a poster on my wall. Ina Colliander - She has the best name..... and her angel-paintings are beautiful!

both Akseli Gallén-Kallela and Hugo Simberg are interesting, i only knew the former before though. and somehow managed to forget one very special artist who is surely known to most people at this forum: John Bauer (than again i might be completely wrong).
