koboldmaki: I'm sure for most of us the few words we can speak in other language are curse words. haha elvenvalkyrja: used to learn latin? That's very wonderful! How far along did you get with the language? Another person from beautiful Germany and a new person from beautiful Switzerland. I love this forum! esteban: I thought the same thing, which is why I created the "general language questions" thread. Don't let my constant German questions fool you though, I was hoping everyone would use it to ask anyone on here about their language.

Yeah, that's always one of the tough parts about learning any language, you can get a good handle on it until you come across the things that are confusing and frustrating as all hell. The worst part though is that Latin isn't exactly an easy language to learn out of a school setting, at least I've only seen a handful of self-teaching books, so perhaps I'm mistaken and missing out. P.s. good to see you came back.

I'm not very good in languages, just Bulgarian and English(not perfect). When I was young in school we have Deutch for a while, but I don't like that language and now I almost forget everything. I was on trip to Odessa, Ukraine and found that russian is understandable even for me(never study it). They say that if I stay 1 month there will be no problems with russian.

Native: Finnish with lots of different brogues ;D Good: English (Exelent understanding, not so good output (writing and talking) ) Horrible: Swedish I can understand few lines with the everyday subjects, but when it comes to talking or writing, my reply is: "Jag kan inte talar svenska" Which means, I can't talk swedish Want to learn: Arabic, I love Mediterranean countries with an Arabian culture, so I wan't to learn to communicate with the locals. At the moment I can speak and understand only few basic lines, but it does make different how they act with you, when they see that you have learned some of their language Too bad I suck at learning new language, I forget the words, the grammar etc. Thats why I really need to consentrate when I want to learn something new

Native: English Good/Decent: Serbo-Croatian. Learned it from my mother and my grandmother. I can understand some Russian as well. Would have approached "good" if I had stuck with it: Norwegian. A friend of mine long time ago was teaching me Norwegian, but I have since forgotten most of it. It didn't seem that hard though. Horrible: Spanish. I took Spanish in high school, but I didn't do very well. But I can convince people that I speak Spanish because I can do the accent, which usually ends up sounding Castillian because I spent a month in Spain. Want to learn: Latin, since it will help me in my Medieval studies.

swordmaiden : you do do medieval studies?! that's so cool! But can you get other jobs than being a teacher or a historian after studying that?? (I'd love to study history, especially Antiquity and the Middle-Ages^^) Arivse : "I can understand few lines with the everyday subjects, but when it comes to talking or writing, my reply is: "Jag kan inte talar svenska" Which means, I can't talk swedish" Same for me in German haha

elvenvalkyrja: I'm glad you think Medieval studies is cool. ;D I also like Ancient History. You can get other jobs besides teaching. You can get jobs in research or in a museum, which is what I want to do.

maris: Very wonderful! We don't always get new members from Netherlands, so it's nice to see you here. Dutch is quite the beautiful language, although it seems damn hard to pronounce for someone like myself who only knows english and is learning German. How different is Dutch compared to the Afrikaans of South Africa? (I may have asked this question on the forum before, not sure if it was relating Afrikaans to Dutch or Quebecois to French, )

the way I see it is that afrikaans is a mixture southern dutch dialect(Brabantian and North limburgish, these 2 dialects have great similarities), standard Dutch and english. But since I'm not a linguistic I have to assume this according to my own experiences with afrikaans
