Wolferin, that statue is awsome! Why can't we have something like that here in finland ? And I agree with Anwend. I "resign" from church at the age when I was able to start thinking by my self. Don't mind if people are in belive, or go to church, but I do mind when they are trying to tell me or someone else what to do, or what I/others can't do because they say so.. I don't understand people who say their religion is the one and only one. Nor do I understand any kind of harm to others because your religion said so or some priest, munk, imam or even the voices in your head spoken by god told you to do so. I belive in freedom to choose your religion, but my point of view is different by the churchs, while they say you can choose any religion on their category, I say you can choose any religion you want, it can be: Pagan, Christian, Buddhism, Jewish, Islam or you can belive in allmighty Trashcan, don't mind. The only important thing is that, it makes you happy, gives you self-confidence, helps you to go through dark times etc. If I would have to explain my religion or spirituality, I would say I belive in humans and their good will. For me I don't need God nor Jesus to belive in good things, or to tell me what I can do and what I can't do. I have my conscience to tell me whats right and whats wrong. I don't need Bibble to tell me killing is bad, or that I shouldn't steal or that loving and careing are important things. Kindness and supporting are things that everyone should do without/before reading about it from some book. For me those are common sence things, things that everyone should know without Bibble or some priests lecture. But thats only me Its okey if you like to do those things by and with the Bibble, but remember not to do bad things even that your book tells you to do. Don't get me wrong and I certainly not wanted to offend anyone with my words. You can belive in anything you want, but let others do that allso

It's refreshing to read that and I totally relate to it (same views here too, and moreso I've always studied doctrines so I know what I deal with in this world). I am sure no one is offended, there's nothing offending in your words, and it's explained with sense.

Wolferin, that statue is awsome! Why can't we have something like that here in finland ? Thank you! I'm sure you have other awaysome things to be seen in Finland. May there will come a day to come and see. If I would have to explain my religion or spirituality, I would say I belive in humans and their good will. Everybody here blames the religious fanatics. But I think fanatic atheists are also very unpleasant, rigid and washed brains. For such a people I say: "It's meaningless to tell about colors to a color-blind, anyway he can't see them."

When it comes to anytype of fanatics, they only see their own vision and belive that thats the only one to be. So I think that anytype of fanatics are just narrow-minded people And being narrow-minded aint doing you any good, life and world are full of things to enjoy and see, that if you overlook or blindfold something, you aren't able to live for the fullest. Well that might gone offtopic but anyways

Wonderful post Arivse: I happen to agree with it completely. And Wolferin beat me to it: radical atheists are extremely unpleasant. For me actually they are often times worse than religious fanatics. They want to abolish ANY notion of God, and not just God but anything that isn't "logical" or "left-brained". So superstitions are a no-no for radical atheists. Culture is a no-no for radical atheists. Both of which are completely harmless and to a great extent (with the latter) very positive and helpful. These types bother me simply because they are even MORE radical than even the most radical religious type out there. Even if they wish to spread their beliefs through positive means like science and education, I still find it bullshit that they're trying to turn everyone away from God. Thankfully though Religion is ingrained in humanity, it is in many ways necessary for our well-being, and even if a large number of us can deal without it, not everyone is the same. Religion will always be around in some shape or form: after all it is based around piety, and as we've seen in the past trying to persecute or banish any religion is only a means for it to become more powerful, not less. With that said though the majority of people I know are atheists. Colleges are breeding grounds for wannabee intellectual types, some more intellectual than others, but all seemingly wanting to cling on to similar concepts. A good deal of my friends are atheists, although thankfully not all of them. Of course not all atheists are radical, many atheists just don't believe in God and leave it at that, with no need to take away the Gods of others. However just like with theists, it's the radicals who make a bad name for the majority. I've found through the years that people can be great and wonderful persons no matter what their beliefs are. I used to be way into Heathenism/Paganism, only befriending those who shared the same ideas and beliefs. But through time I got tired of it, I actually realized that many people were Heathen for the scene-like appeal of it and not really the spirituality of it. I've realized that many people of all religions can be more spiritual than the most staunch person of any particular faith. Now I keep my beliefs, which are very personal, without using them as a means to classify friends. I actually prefer diverse groups of people: it makes life more interesting and it makes discussions more enlightening. And again as always: as long as no one tries to hinder my beliefs or actions than all is well. I'll stop here though before I write an entire book. I seem to be using the forum as a means for procrastinating from my schoolwork today. Hopefully it hasn't bothered you all too much. Wolferin, please let us know whenever there are updates on whether the statue stays or not. Although I feel that it will get to stay.

I hate religion. Its like a poison in the mind, controlling how people think and act.
I believe that you should make your own morals. I believe that there is some sort of energy in all living things you could call spirit if you like. I believe that we have a godly spirit in each of us. We can become like gods by being true to ourselves and being the best we can. Doesn't mean perfection but it means we're living an honest life and are strong.
I've never seen proof of any god so I don't believe in any god. I think though that its okay to look up to a godly figure or that gods can be manifestations of aspects of nature or the natures of man. Like Poseidon was the god of the oceans so its like a personification of the oceans. Thor was mighty in his strength and anger and a mighty warrior. Tyr showed bravery and honour putting his hand in Fenriswolf's mouth. These things are in humans so they're real in that sense.
But God, like the Christians, Jews, and Muslims worship, some perfect, all-powerful being that says do this or go to hell... a tyrant in my eyes.

One of the forums I'm a member of is for mothers. There's always a great deal of intense discussions and it's astounding how often the topics - on ANYTHING! - consistently end up with some type of religious overtones. The loudest being the Atheists and the Bible-quoting Christians.
It's generally not the, "you're not Christian you're going to burn" lectures. But the sentiment is there that once you disagree with them on religion you're looked down upon. The few that are less regimented Christian or spiritual are much more kind and open. I guess that makes sense in some ways, but being raised a Christian I was always taught to be open-hearted and non-judgmental. So I'm not certain where some folks are coming from. Perhaps they were read to from a different book? :-p
A few years ago I dove full force into my heathen/pagan roots and was lead to Asatru. (Wasn't my choice really - ask Freyja!) I've used the mothers forum to try and locate other heathen/pagan families, but it's been futile. I've heard from a few Wiccans but that's a very different lifestyle from Asatru. Even creating the post garnered me some rude mail for my inbox.
I've never understood why if there are so many different groups of people, why can't there also be many different groups of gods? Perhaps everyone is right? Ah, but methinks even if there was proof tomorrow, there would still be those who would be adamant (Adam Ant?) that only theirs was the correct one. Humans, eh?

Crystiannia, to try to write directly about heathen believes in mother's or female forum is a risk. The people are simply afraid, because do not know what's it about. But it goes better "dressed" in an acceptable form. Though my believes are better to be called syncretic and agnostic, I like some pagan ideas. But always say I believe in something mine, which is totally not shocking. So many people agree and began to write or say that for them is the same. Practically we are much more pagans than anything else, but only the names are changed.

I share Wolferin's view on this, and I would like to add that unfortunately most christians I know have the same tendency on looking down on one if they don't belong to their religious belief group. But what I have discovered in time, is that you should have patience and they'll convince themselves on their wrong point of view by seeing that what you think isn't ''bad'', but different and they have to learn to live with it. Tolerence looks good on paper, they should learn how to use theory in practice. Lots to say... On a side note..one of my best friends here is an orthodox priest. Hehe, I asked myself that too: ''have we read different books?'' Actually it's what I've said to my family at first when they did not understand why I am giving up on family religious tradition/orientation. Wanna hear a joke? ;D I also said, that if I am to pick a fairy tale in which to ''believe'', then I should pick me own. ;D I was young now, I'd be more polite and balanced.

I don't believe in religions. I was raised a catholic, but quit the church when I realised that 'they were full of crap'. Talking about love and such, and discriminating one another, and being very focused on money.
I believe that I don't need a religion to be a good person. I try to live up to my own values of compassion, and respect, sounds simple, but it isn't... it's a work in progress and I always try to be more tolerant... which is very hard.

resurrecting the topic abaldrich wrote: This is not true. If you die in jihad, you're a martyr and being a martyr in every religion qualifies you for heaven and heaven is explained as a place you have unlimited amoutn of whatever you want. So heaven has everything you want and you can imagine. If you want virgins, there will be But the Quran just doesnt say you will have 40 virgins waiting there for you.

I was in Islam at first, too. Because 90% of people in my country is muslim and so my family is. I raised as a muslim; I did all the things Allah wanted from me. But 2 years ago, things have changed. I couldn't feel Allah anymore. Islam didn't make any sense for me. So I decided to be a deist. 1 years later I found neo-paganism and it was fitting what I have in my soul. Now I'm a herbalist, a magick practitioner and a witch-tengriist. For whom that doesn't know about tengriism, it's the first and real religion of Middle-Asian Turks. That's it man! I'm in my very precious way and I'm happy. This is what I belong.

I'm Christian
I was catholic by "obligation", arrived at a certain age I don't have considerated me so anymore as I didn't agree with things like "give on poor" saying by someone very rich. I was staying believing in God but without religion until I discover lutherian. The way they mind was pretty much the way I mind myself
