I <3 Mabool! It is a true piece of art imho. Anyways, I don't know any Folk/Etno bands from Belgium (with local folklore, that is) Anyways, to bring you a revelation: Rudra They're from Malaysia, but their music is a mix between some ancient Indian instruments, and alot (ALOT) of Metalcore/Death metal (Worth checking out none the less). Their lyrical themes is the philosofical parts of Hinduïsm (Vedanta) and of course stories from the Veda's, the Upanishads and the Mahabarata (spelling). Some Sanskrit chants and mantra's are thrown in for the flavour. Check them out at www.rudraonline.org/They have been playing for more then 10 years now, and they have released 4 albums. | Arkhis |

Oh no, I had just written such a nice article, and than -of course- the internet breaks down... I'm pissed... Seems like no one has mentioned FAUNyet? Or I just didn't find it... Well, Faun is one of the greatest bands I know You could compare them to Omnia. They call their music medieval pagan folk, and I think that's a good subscription. Some of their texts are taken from old writings and poems (look at my sig! "Egil Saga" written by Sturlurson is my favourite song by Faun ), some are written by Oliver, the singer. All five members are pagans/paganists (<--- ?) and paganism is one of the main topics the texts are about. They use a lot of instruments I've never seen before, and of course bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, recorder, many nice percussion instruments... And the special thing is: They use electronic elements. But it doesn't sound techno-like, they use it often for sounds like water or birds singing. That's pretty cool, I think! At least it sounds so great to my ears. ;D www.faune.deOther nice bands (besides Schandmaul, Corvus Corax, Subway to Sally... ): Volkstrott www.volxtrott.deFiddler's Green (dunno their homepage adress by heart, just try ) Letzte Instanz Sava (looove it) Thanateros www.thanteros.deArsMoriendi www.arsmoriendi.deThe Sandsacks www.thesandsacks.deVivus Temporis (but they don't exist anymore ) Schelmish

It really looks like there are NO etno-folk bands in the UK. How digusting and uncultured are we?

No etno folk bands in England?! You've got plenty of celtic bands running around there. Not to start about english bands like the House Band etc.

Celtic is more generally associated with Scottish and Irish. And I don't think Morris dancers count lol

As far as I know there should be plenty of English folk bands.. Have you heard of Steelye Span for example? (Very good band by the way, if you happen to like that sort of music...)

Saying that, I didnt think Finnish would, but look where I am Am I sensing a sort of undecidedness in your speech, as at first it seems to you that there are no folk-ethno - bands in UK and then if there is, it won't even interest you? No offence, but I'd recommend you to introduce yourself to the real traditional music and listen the bands itself in time, before writing about them in the public messageboards. Thus it's more interesting to chat about these matters in general, if you have a real personal touch of what you're talking about and not just unsure babbling from something you don't even seem to know. And what comes to namely Finnish trad. music, I'd recommend you to study this link. You'll find plenty of groups playing traditional Finnish music from there.

I don't seem to know it, because I don't. I'm quite happy to admit it. And everyone starts somewhere do they not?
But after giving Wiki a good dig down, searching through until finding the folk metal. (they even had a mention for Korpiklaani) I did find a band that sound a lot like Korpi. And they are British, called Skyclad.
Also, looking in that site, I did find a few musicians of interest, so thank you for providing me with the link

Than, talking about folk music in the island I live, for the music that's broadcasted by every local tv channel, I can say I don't really like it so much....on the countrary in the internal small towns, villages there is a really interesting folk culture, the only term with wich I can describe it is obscure...I think it's so ancestral...and unfortunately I do not know so much about it...

I did find a band that sound a lot like Korpi. And they are British, called Skyclad. I saw Skyclad couple of years ago in Tuska Open Air - metal festival and I have to say that I don't find anything common between Skyclad and 'Klaani. Of course they both use violin and they both are classified as "folk metal", but musically there's nothing same. I've always wondered why in most of the reviews people compare these bands (or Finntroll), because musically there's nothing same. Is it only because of the created genre-classification "folk metal", or the similarity in instruments, or what is it? Personally I don't like Skyclad much; the gig in Tuska proved that to me.

Folkmetal from different countries can never be compared. As usually the traditional music, in which folk metal has its roots is hardly the same. And unless Skyclad are wannabe finns then it prolly sounds very different. Just like most folkmetal bands from different countries will all have a completely different sound. wolferin: I wonder... do you know the Bulgarian folkband Lothlorien? I've got some mp3's of em and i love em. But around here i can't seem to find ANY cd's lol

I meant the rhythm is the same, thats the bit I pick up on first, the rhythm and backbeat behind a song. Maybe me and my untrained ears are wrong, but there is something similar.
You cant compare Finntroll and Korpi, they're two completely different sounds

Maybe me and my untrained ears are wrong, but there is something similar. My trained ears don't hear anything similar between Skyclad and 'Klaani. Not a rhythm nor melody. You cant compare Finntroll and Korpi, they're two completely different sounds This is the second thing I've always wondered when reading reviews. Why in the earth there has to be compared every time Finntroll and 'Klaani? I think it's only because Jonne has yoiked in Jaktens tid - album and both are using humppa beat. But I found those very lousy reason to argue that they sound the same, because they don't. I've always wondered this the very same way as I've wondered this comparing with Skyclad. Mostly this is because people don't know that kind of music much, which makes them to create those false-leading pseudo-comparisons. This is the one thing I feel sometimes a little frustrated, as people aren't able to find out how the things really are before putting them into the public media. I'm myself doing now reviews and interviews in Finnish metal magazine Miasma and I'm doing the best NOT to do the same kind of mistakes when I'm facing some bands of which I don't know that much.
