i have to agree with Virva regarding the resemblances between Skyclad and Korpi.....cant really find them. i tried skyclad after ppl both in this forum and at the cruachan one advised to try it out. apart from 1 or 2 songs the rest were not appealing to me.
i found some enlgish folk bands. a question: is it that easy to disassociate enlighs traditional music from teh scottish and irish ones? im asking becuae i dont know, not to be retorical. :]

Of course Skyclad are different from Korpiklaani...and quite a lot..and for me that's obviously a good thing...for many people folk metal bands are similar, other bands are also told to have the same sounds, such as mago de oz,or saurom lamderth,or cruachan etc(and some of these unfortunately I don't like so much) ;but in fact they are so much different...and that difference is a pleasure for my ears...

. And unless Skyclad are wannabe finns .... wolferin: I wonder... do you know the Bulgarian folkband Lothlorien? I've got some mp3's of em and i love em. But around here i can't seem to find ANY cd's lol Auuu, it's a shame, but I've never heard of them. I found this: homepages.ihug.co.nz/~nick-cj/lothmain.htmlThey are Australians. Are you sure that this group is Bulgarian, or they are using only Bulgarian folk motives. Our authentic folklore is quite famous and used in different compilations. But in Bulgaria, as far as know, there's no folkmetal bands (though it's said: "No one is a prophet in his own country"). 'Cause of this I hadn't written here. Here is an example of using Bulgarian folklore by Kepa Junkera, a Basque group. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDQKkzaScUYIn the film "Jesus of Montreal" is used a Bulgarian folksong, but I couldn't find it. www.imdb.com/title/tt0097635/Kate Bush recorded with Trio Bulgarka her album "Sensual World". Sorry, the quality is awful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPsIe1At5v4Skyclad are not Finns. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyclad_%28band%29I agree with all writing that Korpiklaani, Finntroll and Skyclad are very different. In Bulgaria Finntroll are most popular, next -Korpiklaani and Skyclad are still less popular. I don't like very much Skyclad, but I like Finntroll. For 'klaani' it's obvious

Uklfc raises an interesting point when she talks about ENGLISH ethno/folk as opposed to British - which includes the more celtic influenced Irish and Scottish music. There was a big English folk rock scene in the 60s and 70s, with bands like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Steeleye Span and Lindisfarne being really popular, but after that, there doesn't seem to be a lot of bands following that genre. The English scene seems to have been taken over by individuals like Billy Bragg, Beth Orton, Eliza Carthy, Nick Harper and Seth Lakeman and others. Even so, there are still some English bands playing modern folk - the mighty Levellers being surely the main one, but there's also Eighteenth Day of May and the fantastic Bellowhead. The changing demography and culture means a lot of bands are playing fusion type music rather than straight traditional English - like 3 Daft Monkeys and Dalla - experimenting with different instruments and styles. And please don't dismiss Morris dancing!!! Google 'Morris Offspring' and see some surprising stuff

wolferin: I'm very sure they are Bulgarian ;-) www.lot-lorien.com. There's some samples for download there. Besides it's not really a folk metal band which makes it some sort of off topic But it still is bulgarian ethno\crossover. So this seemed the appropriate place

Well...here in Spain I know:
-Luar Na Lubre. From Galicia -Milladoiro. From Galicia -Hevia. From Asturias. I recommend the song called "MEDIEVAL"
I don't know if someone has posted this bands in this thread, but I think they're brilliant so I post them again.
P.D. A band called Celtas Cortos has many folk songs too. They are from Valladolid (Pucela), Spain ;D

There were a couple of guys from Portugal who knew about Luar Na Lubre , Milladoiro and so on. If you like Hevia you'd surely like Carlos Nuñez, he's much better than Hevia.
Celtas Cortos were great! They were from the time when I was more or less your age; they were more pop style, but their shows were very good.

During my researches of the music of the carpathian mountains, i've found many interesting bands from many areas in Ukraine! I'm really suprised how i've even been able to miss such great folk music. There's only one word to describe it: Wild! (Ok...Ruslana was right in that case... ) In this message i will write my own reviews and share information about the ukrainian folk music - editing my message while i know more bands (especially from the carpathian mountains) And i'm also asking for your help if you happen to know any ukrainian folk groups. Thank you! The ukrainiansI cannot help it: - This reminds me a little bit of korpiklaani and eläkeläiset as well. I learned about this group sometime ago and find it very interesting and it's certainly worth listening to. They sing ukrainian folk songs mixed into rock music. They have one album out called respublika. songs: Arkan (trad. song from the carpatian mountains www.russiandvd.com/store/album_asx.asp?sku=44049&track%5Fnumber=05Chervona ruzha trojaka www.russiandvd.com/store/album_asx.asp?sku=44049&track%5Fnumber=03
