This: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Main_Pageis a really helpful site for translating Finnish. Not only does it have a fairly comprehensive Finnish dictionary, but most of the words are fully declined, and it will search the declinations. For example: say you are reading a sentence, and you come across the word "veden". It probably won't appear in your dictionary; and if your grammar is a bit shakey (like mine you might not be able to figure out the undeclined form, and most paper dictionaries only include these forms (otherwise they'd be enormous). But if you look it up on Wiktionary, you learn that it is the genitive singular of "vesi". Wiktionary also has some of the less common words which don't always appear in a dictionary, but which Finnish songwriters are fond of using . Like "tahi", for example, a few years ago I was trying to translate a Teräsbetoni song, and that one little word had me stumped!

Kuusuru, you are a genious. I've started studying Finnish recently and sometimes I need to look up some words I don't understand. I have a Polish-Finnish dictionary, but it's small and there are not that many words, so I am still searching for a bigger one. But I never thought about using wiktionary, silly me. XD

Here's another good, free, online resource for learning Finnish, maybe you've seen it already: donnerwetter.kielikeskus.helsinki.fi/FinnishForForeigners/This one is great for vocabulary and pronunciation - pretty much everything has a sound file with it so you can hear it as it should be . Well, as it should be in books...

Savi: Yeah, it's pretty difficult to learn, and I have really demanding teachers (but this is good for motivation, I guess). But I like it a lot, especially that my studies are not only about the language, but also culture & history. Although I had to give up most of my free time, because Finnish is my second faculty and now I am spending my whole days at the university. And that also means that I rarely spend time on the internet. xP kuusuru: Thanks for this one as well!
